I like the Bausch & Lomb Hastings 7X. It is a good general purpose magnifier that balances price and quality quite well. I can easily count steps with mine. Note that it is a loupe and requires use close to the eye as opposed to a magnifier that can be used at arm's length. If you're comfortable with a loupe, I'd highly recommend this item.

Check Wizard Coin Supply for a nice variety of loupes and magnifiers in all price ranges and powers.
