Artistic license in eBay lot description of 1794 half dime

An interesting 1794 Flowing Hair half dime appeared on eBay this evening.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1794-RARE-Key-Date-Flowing-Hair-Half-Dime-Coin_W0QQitemZ160223513004QQihZ006QQcategoryZ149929QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The seller advises that the coin is in "... beautifully conserved condition" and was "... gently cleaned and beautifully conserved", further advising that "... professional cleaning will allow the coin to last for future generations". He further admonishes us not to attempt such cleaning ourselves "...unless we use the same techniques that NCS would use". However, the seller never mentions the enormous plug seen behind Miss Liberty's head on the obverse, and under the eagle's right (viewer's left) wing. The back of Miss Liberty's head and curls have been creatively reengraved, dramatically changing the size and shape of the head.

I submit that "professional cleaning" is the least of this coin's problems. Buyer beware.

To his credit, the seller has ammended his lot description. After reading my OP, Mark Feld (Coinguy) contacted the seller, and he revised his description to include the word "plugged". Hopefully this will prevent an unsuspecting bidder from making a huge mistake.

That must have taken some skill to plug a hole of that size on such a thin coin...
  • I don't think I would buy a 1794 half dime from a seller named "Ace PC Repair."
Looks like he's branched out and is repairing more than just PCs.
