Over 4500 feedbacks and he still can't grade...

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭

<< <i>1822 Bust Half Dollar with AU58+ details. This one is a lightly cleaned BU that has since toned over. >>

It's actually a quarter, not a half, but I don't think it's anywhere close to AU58. I'm not sure it would even make AU50.... Linky

Just my daily rant, thanks for reading.

Looks like that coin has been dipped about 30 times.

It has that tell tale 'overdipped' look to it.

I thought out of everything this was the most striking comment:

"This one is a lightly cleaned BU that has since toned over."
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

According to my Red Book, the 1822 quarter is worth a lot more than the 1822 half? but I sure don't know a fair price for a cleaned example with EF details... Rob

I just can't believe the guy has so many feedbacks and they're ALL positive! If he's been grading coins like this how don't more people call him on it?? Maybe this is first Bust Quarter, who knows. But yeah, it's been dipped big time and the retoning isn't natural. Usually when a coin has a sandy brown appearance it's been artificially toned.

That would be a nice metal detector find for sure, but "BU" it is not.

I saw that one this morning. Has a processed look that may well be masking repair work. Obvious circulation. I thought I had done biz with this seller in the past but we have not left fb for each other. I sometimes remain silent in lieu of a neg but really do not recall here.

Seller has an 1822 half as well...I think it may well be MS but has issues too. Given description and naive buyers, it may see MS money. The 1806 25c is already well above the PCGS guide.

    Edited to add:
Despite the above, I have them on my watch list. Not certain I will bid as I noted the high bidder for a number of them is the same individual and all of the bids were placed in rapid succession which leaves me suspicious. Ugh!

Whoa! Check out the strike on the 1864 L IHC he's selling. I wouldn't touch that coin...let alone for $160+ I guess the guy gets his feedback and strong prices because he posts good pics. Still....I would be wary of anything he sells after seeing that 1822 CBQ. That and he throws around the word "original" a little too liberally.

Should the thread opener then read: "Over 4500 people screwed and they still believe his grade..."

I guess his key is selling better date coins.

Looks like folks don;t care a whole lot about grade on the better date stuff...wrong, but looks like he takes advantage of it.

I put much more trust in someone's pictures than feedback. His photos are really good; large, crisp quality and no signs of photoshopping. I could care less about how poorly he grades. I never base a purchase on someone's grade. How many ebayers out there accurately grade raw coins. I don't ever go by the grade a seller gives even coins in NGC or PCGS slabs.
