Software Inquiry - Tracking My Collection

I didn't anticipate there was so much information to keep track of, as I gradually add to my [currently] limited collection. As I note my accumulation so far, I can see it's easy to have this thing get away from me, and before long, I'd be putting this stuff in drawers with an "I'll get to it later" attitude about organizing it...

Before that happens, I'd like to get a handle on things, and wondered what, if anything, you use to keep track of things like purchases, groupings, dates, values, gradings, etc., etc...

I'd appreciate your suggestions... there must be several programs available for this... where do I go from here?

Thanks!!

I use a the freeware spreadsheet from OpenOffice. It is file compatible with Excel. A lot of folks use Excel. For most collectors, a spreadsheet is more than enough.

I use Excel and have done so for more than a dozen years. It's free, easy to use and can be customized to fit most needs.

I have Collector's Inventory, by Red Book. It's not extensive enough though for those who collect anything prior to 1850.

I'd like to get some type of PDA (personal digital assistent) that
could be taken to coin shows and be hooked to a PC at home to
exchange data. It could have a collection list, want list and coin
values, maybe even digial photos for grading or VAM's etc. I'm not sure what to get and don't want to waste money
buying three or four thing before I find one that works.
Any idea of what brand and model to look for ?

Anyone have experience using Coinmange software? If so comments on its ease of use and overall rating of organization would be welcome.

This looks good, wish they had a downloadable demo as Coinmange does. I've been trying out the demo and the entry is a wiz, the current program I use is very tedious and time consuming. Is teh Numis Vista mostly point and click for adding to inventory with entry of purchase price being the only key in spot?

There are two ways to add items: In bulk and one at a time.
For bulk entry I don't think any info is actually required... you can add as much or as little as you want.
I almost always fill in as much as I know, though for my ancients I just add the country, pictures and cost info.
    It's very flexible.

I use Coinmanage and have for three years. The program itself is easy to use. The stock photo's in the database leave somthing to be desired but I like it.

Does Coinmange cause Miss Liberty's hair to fall out?

  • Just keep in mind that this program is made and sold by a canadian company. Nothing wrong with that but I have found some issues that I can overcome but should not be there.

  • CoinManage here..............................I've used it for 6 years.

Upgraded twice to newer software a while back, both times data did not transfer properly.

Now using CoinManage 2006.........................I'm still pissed at the snafu when I upgraded,

but I have too much data to try to start with new software, so I'm kinda stuck.

The 2008 version is out, I be scared to try my luck a third time.

I regret buying CoinManage2008 - I would look around for something else.

I've had that problem with canned s/w in the past, so I created an inventory spreadsheet in Excel and have used it for years. No upgrade problems there.

I used to have a Handspring PDA (do they still make those?) that worked great for that. I purchased a fairly cheap (Less than $15) Excel program for it, and download my spreadsheets directly from my home computer. All of my information was right there and handy in a lightweight, easy to carry format. Unfortunately, I let somebody borrow it and I haven't seen it since. image

With Nums Vista you can publish the results of any search to HTML, upload it as is to
whatever web space you can get your hands on and access it with any internet capable
    handheld device or cell phone.
    It will change your life...
