Platinum Collector Census

Out of sheer curiosity, who here collects (or accumulates) American Platinum Eagles?

Which denominations and types (proofs, uncs, burnished) do you collect?

I was trying to do them all, but now I've decided on the 1/2 oz. and 1 oz. of all types.

Added: I do have an ulterior motive for asking. In making this tabulation, each participant in this thread might be able to find trading partners and be better able to fill in some of the gaps in his/her collection.

  • I do them all. I always buy the 4 coin proof sets every year.
  • I collect the $10 and $25 proof versions
I was collecting the bullion version aslo but since the steep rise in platinum price and the addition of the MS (with the proof reverse) I have curtailed that option.
I wish the mint would consider changing metals.

I do the $50s in proof, and the $25 & $50 burnished die unc Ws. I do pick up the odd coin in other denominations, too, for speculation, but I almost always guess wrong on those anyway. My real collection is the $50 proofs.

    1/10 oz proofs (01-07)

    1/10 oz W Unc (07 only)

    1/10 oz Unc (08 only)

I want to get the 97-00 1/10 proofs and the 06 W unc if and when I find them.....

The 1/10 oz 2008 Unc is thinking potential low mintage

$25 Proof - All years and 4 Coin Set Burnished W Uncirculated for as long as I can. After that, $25s in Proof and UNC and $50s in UNC only. My favorite size is the $25s but I also like the $50s in UNC...
  • I collected the four coin proof sets from 97 to 03. Back then ICG PR70 four coin sets cost up to $2k, that’s less than an ounce today. NGC PR70ucam and PCGS PR69 sets where a couple hundred more then ICG.

Today ICG PR70 = raw proof, because no one wants to buy them in ICG slabs. I can get more $ for my PCGS PR69 sets in the big slab that holds all four coins.

I am glad I bought and am holding them. Though I wish I had the funds to keep buying because the reverse designs have been more attractive every year.

Guess I can sell the two extra 01 sets and one extra 03 set to get either the 04 or 06 proof set that I think are gorgeous.

Plat proof set every year from the mint. Was buying a few pieces a year just for bullion, but now it's a tad expensive.
  • a few, here and there for me. Just whatever i have the money for. at the time. I do love them! image

I only have the China Panda 1 troy ounce platinum series. It is a short run from 1987 to 1990 + 1 - 1987 New York Coin Show Commem. And I completed them before platinum went up past $600. image

Yes I collect them. But I am disenchanted with the price increases which will curtail collecting them in the future.

Here is some food for thought. I am disenchanted with the price increases, too. But on the other hand, I see no groundswell of governmental policy that is particularly geared toward stopping the slide of the dollar and inflation.

That being the case, and knowing how well platinum has served as a hedge against all of that, why would you (or I) stop buying platinum just because the nominal price in dollars has changed? It's done its job. The value is more, not less, now.

It's curious how the mind works when changes occur too quickly.

  • I started to collect the $50 proofs in 2005 and I also collect the $50 w-unc burnished plats. I have a small hoard of the 2006 w-uncs and still need to acquire the 1997-2000 and 2002 $50 proofs.

I collect the $50 proofs as well as my platinum type set of 1 of every denomination plus the $10 LOC bimetalic commen. I would like to get a type set of us $50 coins since I have the gold 20th anniv set and the platinum proofs and a 06 w, but I think the pan pacific $50 will set me back way more than I'm willing to spend.
  • I collect proof platinum quarters and halves. I am missing the 1997-2000 proof halves. I also collect the changing reverse "w" quarter and half platinum eagles. I have some tenths and $100 coins but I do not "collect" them. I have been working on quarter back dates lately.

If the price jumps I will use puplicates to finance the new issues. If platinum goes into orbit I may have to fall back to complete proof & "w" quarter set collecting. I want to stay with the halves too if I can.

  • I collect $25 burnished Platinum Eagles and I also have a few proof $10 and $25s that I bought a few years ago.

I started to collect the 1 ounce about two years ago but at the time $1K per ounce was a bit much for me and I ended up selling last year. Still some of my favorite designs I am just priced out of the market right now.

If I were starting from scratch the changing reverse platinum quarters would be my "ride".

  • I tried to do all the Proofs, $100, $50 $25 and $10 but it just got to expensive.

I started out with the $10's in all forms and still keep those sets going. I may go back to the other denominations if I win the lottery. image
