10 Not sure about the too much money.
9 Some folks think if someone has a few decent coins they are rich and should have a give-away.
8 Some give-aways are disingenuous at best and more self serving. Guess the final price of my auction and I'll throw you a hunk of bullion.
7 Too many people expect something for nothing, especially coin collectors.
6 Many people that never even post are sure there for a give-away.
5 Some do it because they think they should.
4 Some do it do try and be popular.
3 I believe the responders to a give-away should have to work for it, and not just a post here. (ever notice when they have to work for it there are much fewer replies?)
2 I've given away a few things, and to show their appreciation, probably 1 out of four could give me the courtesy to let me know they received.
1 I JUST DON"T FEEL LIKE IT!!!!!!
<< <i>Why????? >>
I think most people are more than happy to do giveaways of substantive material if they are reasonably assured of the following:
* The recipient will not flip said items for a profit.
* The recipient is a student of the item and willing to learn more.
* The recipient does their homework and does not expect everyone to spoonfeed them.
* The recipient cannot afford said items for legitimate reasons, ie. they are in school or have financial issues which are not their fault.
* The recipient will enjoy possessing said items more than the benefactor.
In other words, the bar is not low, and probably someone has to personally know you in order to appreciate that all these conditions are indeed being met.
entered.
I think you are asking why those that do have "too much money" do coin giveaways.
I believe is boils down to self gratification. They receive gratification for one or more reasons.
They feel good giving.
Makes them feel part of a group.
Perhaps a coin they value little now will please someone else and give that someone else a good opinion of the giver.
To get back at their inlaw as it is their coin they are giving away.
There are numerous reasons that create that sense of gratification in this situation.
While I love giveaways, no one should feel compelled to have one. If you begrudge a gift, you should not give it. My giveaway was an NGC proof Louisiana quarter when my home state and alma mater (LSU) made the National Championship in football. I specifically bought the coin in order to give it away, thinking it made a nice tie-in to the state I love and call home.
I think maybe the number of giveaways a person chooses to have (or not have) may be reflective of how much he appreciates the advice of his fellow forum members.

Now where's my giveaway?
<< <i>I didn't see this was a give-away thread, must have edited it in. Please do not enter me as I don't enter these.
Ahhhhh...so I wasn't the only one who responded without realizing it was a giveaway thread. Likewise, I would not have responded, either.

indeed the OP did edit it so as not to appear to be a flaming liberal

Thanks, then the OP seems to fit in #4-5 on my original post. Heh heh
The most I've ever spent on a coin was a proof '07 ASE for my newborn niece... and $50 for the "Secret Santa" project. I've also sent items to members who were (strangely enough) looking for something that I actually had - and some very nice forum members have kindly sent me coins....
My two biggest coin purchases (for my collection) were $25 & $20.... which means that anything else I would be giving away would be considered either low-end "crap" or generic modern/generic bullion, or common "world" coins. (Not to mention, my daughter is always pilfering any coin she can from me - with permission of course
One thing about giveaways... just because they are available doesn't mean you have to enter!! If it's not an item that I am really into, I don't enter 'just because I can'.... I know someone else would enjoy & appreciate it more than I. I have been offered some very nice items (coins/books/catalogs) from members that I did not partake of because I felt that they would end up in a more appropriate parties hands.
If someone has a gazillion posts & has never had a *giveaway*... so what.... I'm sure they've "given away" plenty of "value" to the members in their participation & posts. If someone is addicted to having giveaways - YAY.... they are fun.
I did a giveaway when I first joined - and I'll be doing another shortly (with my upcoming 1888th post!!)
i think it should be done if one wants to, not has to
2. ...?
(though I will do a giveaway at some point to show my appreciation to the members here, just now starting to have dupes)

I for one would like to see more YN giveaways....you know how cool it was to get a freebie as a kid (or could at least imagine). It could mean a world of difference in a kid's attitude toward the hobby and toward people in general.
I will say that there are some really generous people here, though. A big thanks is due to them.
Oh, and thank for the chance!
This hobby is a luxury so, I am neither interested in receiving or giving anything away.
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
At my 1,000 post mark, I was going to give something away but (#1) I didn't know "what" to give away (like if someone held a giveaway and nobody came what wuld you do?) and (#2) when the number came up, I had totally forgotten about it.
The name is LEE!
To celebrate something (sometimes posting a certain number of messages, sometimes other things).
To give a opportunity for others to enjoy something that they normally would not purchase a chance to expand their collecting horizons.
Giving things away can feel good from time to time.
TO ACTUALLY SEE one of your threads go over 100 posts
And lastly why not?
You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.
Just because a wealthy board member chooses not to do a giveaway here does not mean that they are not giving away coins or not being generous in other ways. Besides, there are other ways to give other than material things.
