Another counterfeit PCGS slab from China

Just came across this Trade Dollar and tried to check the certification number - it came back not valid.
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

Bad translation or a public hi skewl graduate?

  • This is a serious question, if it is in fact a counterfeit can't pcgs go after the seller?

They could try, but I doubt they would have much success. Microsoft, Adobe, and just about every other software maker have been trying to stop software pirates for years. A few counterfeit coin slabs would be small potatoes in comparison.

  • I really don't see why the counterfeiters don't just go ahead an put a real PCGS number on the slabs, that corresponds to a coin that matches the fake....I mean they already go to a lot of trouble now, it seems pretty simple to just get a number from the PCGS site and put it on their own slab...It sure would open the door to a lot more people buying the things that aren't aware of the problems...

They are already doing just that. If you glance at the slab, everything looks ok, but the coins still look fake......for now.image

    Auction has been yanked.
    When in doubt, don't.

Wow. Someone must have stirred up ebay to get it pulled that fast.

Once the slab and coin both look convincing is when the real trouble will start. When was the last time you verified a cert number at a show or B&M? What if the cert checks but the coin is actually a cracked out lower grade? Are the days of blind purchasing coming to a close? (for non-Numistmatist investors, I know most on here would never buy the holder image )

Ah,Ha - the ANA got involved that explains why ebay moved so fast. Thanks, I didn't realize the ANA monitored the coin forums.

I would think that if this type seller is kept off ebay that this problem would be kept to a minimum. What other outlets are there for chinese coin dealers?

Cool, is there a specific contact at the ANA for this kind of thing?

A number of American companies have tried to stop counterfeit products from China but their legal system
puts up so many roadblocks it is next to impossible to stop the stuff from coming.
