This is actually funny. Let say for the sake of argument that these two guys from Beckett are legit and are just given those sealed boxes from the manufacturer who probably sent them to them loaded up so they would get a favorable response for their product. In fact all they really suceeding in doing was pissing off their collecting base and actually hurting sales. It would be like the State Lottery people doing a show with somebody scratching off lotto tickets and winning one of very limited Million dollar prizes. Unbelievable

NOT THE FIRST TIME this has gone on with a random box break, they should do a GAI 52 topps pack with a Mantle in it

Art, UD should hire you to boost their sales! image

A lot of these new products, such as UD Black for Basketball have lots of 1 OF 1's, dosen't mean they are picking the boxes.

How about when they do a box break and its crappy? I don't see anybody saying anything about those video breaks. Sure your gona hit something good sometimes, and sometimes your not. These new products are made these days to make sure you get something decent and not be a total loss like all of the older products, so thats why they charge so much.

Hitting the best card possible from any product all year long ranks slightly higher than hitting something good sometimes.

UD Black is a limited production product that they stacked to gurantee you one or two A group autos per 10 case break. The 1/1s are nearly the same level as the 2005 Diamond Kings 1/1s. I am calling it now that UD Black will not book like people are thinking and the cards will see a big drop over the next months.

I hate that guy with the beard. Watch how smug he looks after he says "I haven't seen this many seals since I went to the San Diego Zoo." Settle down Carlin, you're really not that clever.
  • AllenAllen Posts: 7,165 ✭✭✭
Lee you should have seen when he pulled the Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander in the same pack. "I haven't seen so many tigers since that drunk kid went to the San Francisco zoo with a sling shot....remember that, when the tiger ate him?"

I decided to watch the video and it seemed really awkward. I've watched several of their breaks and the dude on the right goes nuts regularly over cards that are nowhere close to the value of an AP 1/1. It was strange how reserved he was. Like someone mentioned on the Beckett boards, it seemed like he knew it was going to happen.
  • This is the reason I collect mostly vintage.

Do they really think that the majority of us are THAT stupid? At least make it somewhat believable.

I watched that yesterday. Interesting to note they also pulled the Vince Young 1/1 last year from UD. I cannot believe they were dumb enough to post that after the fall out from the Young deal, and the fallout from the Gretzky's all sprawled out on the table. I do not think that Beckett had anything to do with getting the choice boxes (I think UD is to blame). I do however believe they are out of touch with the pulse of the hobby, and just plain stupid.

  • Upper Deck has recently changed their head of Public Relations.

The new direction of UD seems to be "down hill" ... fast.

I think Topps has improved somewhat, but overall, fewer sets - greater quality will help.

Bad promotion will do nothing to gain the small buying power that most collectors have.

As of today, if I had a choice - Upper Deck would not one one of them.

It might have been topps, remember, was it the "Mother Teresa"..at the national last year? Notice how the 52 pack was cracked and yielding one psa 8..UGGHH
  • I'm not positive about whats going on with UD and those videos, but as far as Beckett's Basketball mag, there always opening boxes of cards from UD to tell people how they did, and almost all the results I see are not that great, not great at all. Now with the videos, maybe they get more public views from their video breaks then thier mag??? If so, then I guess there doing something? Can't say really, but I know there is no messing around with the breaks they do and put the results in their magazine, you can check that out yourself if you pick up any beckett Basketball guide. Don't know about all the other sports because I don't do other sports, I just do Basketball.

  • I am appalled at what I saw. All the bigs names, signatures and patches that came out of those 2 boxes. Come on that is rediculous. I am considering dumping all of my SP and SPX and just collecting Playoff Contenders from now on and maybe going back to vintage Topps. Maybe I am pulling the trigger a little quick but that is very irritating. Nobody gets that lucky...image

Exquisite is a hand collated set. So UD knows what are in those boxes unlike SPA, SPx and others that are machine collated.

Oh, cool, I didn't know that, so I guess they can do something with the video then. I can't remember if they ever showed Exquisite or any other high end product in their mag, maybe can't remember.

But you gotta admit that the video of the Babe Ruth 1 OF 1 was a little wierd, no?

How convinient was it that they started to video once the wrapper was almost all the way off?

Upper Deck Responds to Beckett 2007 Exquisite Football Box Buster Episode
    Mar 28 2008 3:21PM

Upper Deck was very concerned about the reaction of the collecting community to the contents pulled from two boxes of 2007 Exquisite Football during a recent Beckett Box Busters episode.

Upper Deck, like all manufacturers, makes a practice of sending product samples to hobby publications as a way to help preview products and promote new brands with collectors. Upper Deck DOES NOT make a practice of sending "special" boxes and packs to these hobby partners. As anyone can see from reviewing the history of Upper Deck product in Beckett Box Buster episodes, this recent episode was an anomaly.

The cards pulled in the Beckett Box Buster episode occurred because of collation inconsistencies that could have happened in any hobby shop in any part of the world. Upper Deck understands and appreciates collector concerns on this situation and we are announcing a program to deliver these cards back to collectors.

We are offering the cards in the second pack to collectors who have purchased Exquisite Football. Collectors who purchased the product can send the empty box or a receipt from the purchase to the address below. A random drawing from these entries will be held to determine the winners. An additional two sealed packs of 2007 Exquisite Football will be offered to entries in this program.
    The Upper Deck Company
    NFL Exquisite Box Buster Promotion
    5909 Sea Otter Place
    Carlsbad, CA 92010

Collectors should include all of their contact information including address, phone number and e-mail address. For each pack purchased, collectors will receive one entry into the wrapper redemption promotion. Proof of purchase must be received by Friday, May 30, 2008. Winners will be contacted directly by Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

In the coming days, Beckett will be announcing how it is giving away the contents of pack No. 1, including the Adrian Peterson 1/1, and an additional sealed box of Exquisite, through an online contest at beckett.com.

the only UD i know of is Ugly Duckling & they rock the house.

Upper Deck needs to close shop & sell bagels,
they have contributed very little to the cardboard world
but a quad-auto POS that was 100% fake!

  • Look, if UD wanted to sell more product by putting 1 OF 1's in those boxes on purpose, why would they put 1 OF 1's anyways? Wouldn't they think that people would say to themselves, there goes the 1/1 that I can't pull because its been pulled already, so why buy the box?

If anything, they don't want the super cards to come out on live box break, because they want to save the special cards for the collector, and to have more people buy boxes. Why would they give up the best cards in the product like 1 OF 1's for their live box break??? Makes no sense to me.

i think the last time a card company went overboard with 1/1's, it didnt end well for them...Donruss brought it upon themselves and UD is next if they keep up the shenanigans.....

i personally NEVER BUY new UD products....

can this hobby remain strong despite the modern junk that is around....

will the hobby mature and focus on more vintage stuff (2001 and below)....i know i know 2001 is not vintage, but to me it was agreat year!
  • Big question is also, how many of those that bought those boxes kept them?
I don't know about you guys, but I have enough garbage around the house. I don't collect or buy football, so this particular set is amoot for me. But I throw out all my garbage in the recycling bin. I''m not going to the recycling plant looking for them.

Those were not your typical cardboard crap boxes. Like the Topps Sterling many people including myself keep those boxes. I think more people sold the empty boxes on ebay instead of throwing them out. Who keeps the reciepts though?

I know it would cost money to randomly buy products, but it seems like a conflict of interest to do box break reports on boxes supplied.

"upper deck does not make a practice of sending special boxes and packs to these hobby partners."

to me, that sounds like they are saying that they dont do it on a consistant basis.

"make a practice"= doing something often.

i dont know why they choose to use those words. it doesnt help them.
  • julen23julen23 Posts: 4,558 ✭✭
they have no cardboard market niche,
other than destroying pieces of baseball history & distributing into little pieces across the universe.

  • While I don't buy Upper Deck stuff very often. I tend to agree with the poster that asked why they would do this. You just removed the chances of getting 2 of the most valuable cards in the set this has to hurt the product more than it helps it.
  • GOODLIEUGOODLIEU Posts: 629 ✭✭
Bottom Line; Upper Deck/Beckett is doing what any major business would do when a well meaning promotional idea goes south. Damage Control. CohoCorp your observations are right on target IMO.

They're marketing to a less sophisticated crowd. Read some threads on the Beckett boards and you'll see why they're doing this hokey crap.
  • If you want to waste time on a site where a couple of the moderators play favortism to certain individuals, while holding vendictive personal grudges on others, childish fighting going on night and day over virtually nothing, and the clowns who run and work for Beckett try to blow smoke up your fanny with their pathetic stories to cover themselves, their message boards are the place to be.

I used to browse on there every now and then, but that place, and Beckett in general, has become so ignorant, I can care less anymore.

It's kind of sad, as I have personally witnessed that company continually going down hill in the last 4-5 years. Use to, I had some respect for Beckett, but those days have since long passed.
