Yet another scanner question....

I know we've had numerous threads about scanners, but one that has never been addressed is which models scan foils well (if any!). Ive been scanning all of my McGwire cards for my website, and once I got to the later years 1995-on, a lot of the cards have some kind of foil, be it silver, gold, red, blue, etc. and it always shows up real dark, or even black on my scanner. I am about to purchase a new scanner, and have noted which ones have nice clean scans of slabbed cards, but could some of you try out your scanners with foiled cards and post the results? I have even tried scanning the card while one edge is elevated to see if that would help, but it didnt.

Here's a couple scans of different cards, I use an epson 4490 perfection. Not sure if they help answer your questions -

  • I have an HP Scanjet 5370C and it does NOT do foil scans all that well.

This card has a BRIGHT gold foil border and it looks faded and dard in this scan. I even tried it about three different times.

This one has the name in gold foil, and again, faded and dark...

So no HP 5-series for you! image

I don't have a lot of foil cards that I scan but the few that I have done with my Epson turned out well. I don't know anyone on these boards that has an Epson scanner that doesn't like it.

Here's my scan of a manny ramirez foil, obviously not a 10 but it shows what the epson does with foil cards.

  • Thanks for the scans guys! Jim, I really like how the Marshall Faulk and the Favre scanned. Is the Faulk silver foil? And is the Farve copper or gold foil? At least it shows up and can be read, unlike what Im dealing with now.

The crappy scanner I have now (Lexmark X75) scans regular cards great, the colors are really vibrant, but it isnt CCD and doesnt scan slabs well at all. It is good at scanning reflective cards, just not anything with foil. Somebody suggested to me to crack a slab and use the front half as a tray to get the card of the scanner glass, but since my scanner doesnt have CCD, it comes out blurry, so Im not sure if that will end up improving the scan or not.
