How much would a 1973 American League all-star team signed baseball be worth? Includes Munson.

So I'm playing catch tonight with a friend from work and he tells me that he has two '85 Kansas City Royals autographed balls and asks if I want to see them. I'm a Cardinal fan at heart so I wasn't overly excited about seeing those balls and reliving the '85 series but I said yes anyway. Well one of them didn't look like an '85 Royals team ball, especially since the year "1973" was written on the sweet spot and the first autograph I see is Nolan Ryan. I get to looking closer and I see what appears to be a Thurman Munson signature. I can't read a lot of the signatures but I did make out Dave Nelson, who was on the '73 all star team. I'll get pics tomorrow, but if this is a '73 American League autoed ball what would something like this be worth? Thanks in advance!

I googled '1973 signed all star baseball' and got that hit.

    Google is a wonderful thing.

Google is great but at the same time a ball that has been sitting in someone's store with a price tag of $2,850 is hardly a great indicator of value. Obviously the ball is worth less than that or it wouldn't be in the store any longer. How much lower is fair? Is $2,000 still too much? Is it closer to $1,000 or even less? I know its true worth will only be realized when it is sold but I'm just looking for a rough estimate.

    est $200-$400 tops.

If you search you will see AS balls dont bring as much as you might think.

I remember asking a question a ways back - if people would pay good money for a truly comprehensive tome that included pics and stuff.

    I know I would.

This is disappointing - I have the Standard Catalog of Sports Memorabilia - 3rd edition - 2003 and it "doesn't" include AS BB's.

I looked at an older catalog - also a Kause pub from 1996 - and it's included. The AL ball with Munson had a range of 350-500$.

Just to get a feel for relative inflation of this pub, I looked at a '73 Yankee ball with Munson from the '96 pub - it was at $2-235.

AND, they had the same exact value in 2003!!!

So, I don't really have much faith in these guides. Let's face it - nothing beats ebay and other auctions as a true price guide.

But, I will say - having Munson on a team or AS ball is no where as good as a SS OAL ball.

Wish I could've been more help.

On the topic of values comparison between 1995 and 2008

Many (not all) cards/autographs are still roughly the same value as they were in the mid to late 90's. You need to go back to the late 80's before you really see the values (sell prices) were much lower on most run of the mill items.
I still have ads I placed in SCD in the 1990s and looking at the prices I was asking then and my prices now for the exact same cards is actually very similar in most cases.

Remember....... eBay brought a ton of collectibles out of the woodwork that you normally wouldnt have see in the market, and in some cases has over saturated the market we were all used to pre-eBay. Any mom and pop with a computer can sell their own items now and not be forced to sell to some dealer at the corner card shop for pennies on the $.

EXAMPLE: 1933 Sanella Babe Ruth cards, I have an SCD article from the early90s that shows they sold for $1000+ when you could find one (pre-eBay), and now anyone can pick one up on eBay for under $50 since every closet/attic in Germany has been searched and what used to be a rare card is actually now the most common vintage Ruth card out there.

You asked a question and I tried to answer it.

<<Obviously the ball is worth less than that or it wouldn't be in the store any longer>>

    Not true at all.

actually that price is a good indicator, one where you could start from which was my intent.

If you want to know the exact price of your exact ball on a specific day auction it off.

Or...take stock of all the sigs and do some math.

Before I looked that info up I thought to myself 1000.00

I was surprised that someone even had one hence my google remark.

I do appreciate the Google search, Steve. I hadn't thought to do that. And I meant no disrespect to you by my comment.
