Grading Help -- 1806 Draped Bust 50c & 1814 Capped Bust 50c

These coins have been in a small yellow business/manila envelope for the last 50-75 years (belonged to my great grandfather). Will post the grades I received from another coin forum after people have had an opportunity to take a stab at it. Thanks!

Welcome to the club.
Nice coins. The CBH looks to be a nice AU. (edited to add)-Can't tell luster from the pics to see what end of AU it is.
Nice DBH also! not my grading niche.

Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
Then again, unless you plan to sell, I would not recommend slabbing either of them.
<< <i>They both appear AU and look very nice. The 1806 might only slab as a 45 but if so, she's PQ.

To be honest, I know little to nothing about coin grading. Why wouldn't a slab be recommended if I don't plan to sell? Would exposure to the elements be worse in that than in an envelope?
Thanks all for your responses.
Grading these can be a challenge without seeing in hand.
From the images I would call the 06 an EF45+ depends on the luster in hand
and I would call the 1814 an AU50+ once again it all depends on what the luster looks like.
Thanks for posting these beauties
CBH- AU-55/58 (55+)
Great looking coins and welcome to the forum.

The slabs to provide protection but there are alternatives, such as air-tites, that provide protection and allow for access to the coin. Once they are slabbed, you are unable to appreciate the lettered edge. Plus, so long as one uses due care, there is no substitute for holding a raw coin to fully appreciate it.

Hi Ben, not sure what you mean. Do you have similar coins that were stored in the same way?
<< <i>I love the letters clashed into the shield and below the right wing on the 1814. Nice coins. I plan to set a few aside for my grandkids to discover as well. No slabs. I got a 1796 Liberty Cap large cent and a 1858 flying eagle cent from my great grandmother (still have them). I'll probably leave my grandkids a few nice CBHs.

I think I will do the same with these coins and try to add some more of my own as time goes by. It feels good to open a "treasure chest" like this, regardless of the specific grades/dates/values.
