Ebay feedback question

Hypothetical question,
You buy a coin on the bay, and shipping is fast and fairly priced. communication is swift and too the point, leaving nothing in doubt.
but when you receive the coin in question, you grade it lower then him, its raw, but you can see where the other person might overgrade it (with ownership adding a point or two)
how many stars do you leave to accurate description?

Personally based on everything else, I would give them benefit of the doubt, chalk it up the hazards of buying without the coin in hand, give 5 stars and toss it in my drawer and look for a better one down the road.

On ebay? Only a point or 2 less? 10 Stars!
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
  • It is better to just buy the coins based on the pictures rather than what the seller says about the coin.

Many sellers grade their coins high hoping that somebody believes them about the grade.

Essentially, it is a though the coin was in a fake slab graded MS 66 when it's really a few points lower.

Is he a professional coin dealer?
    Are you?

From the sounds of it, since it was raw, with just pictures/description, I would take it as is and give it a good rating

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I agree but with that said its easy enough to light a coin such a way marks are hidden. Even looking at pictures we have to take the sellers word somewhat. I know that at least with Morgans I have a freind that has warned me off several sellers becuase of their ablity to hide in shadows and highlights defects. As for the hypothetical coin, I would hypothetically be pleased to have it, but it might not fit in the hypothetical set it was bought for. I hypothetically would have only had a second of doubt about giving the seller 5 stars, but was really curious about others thoughts on the matter.

Does he offer a return policy? If so I'd use it. It doesn't sound like you are terrible happy with the coin. If you're sort of neutral on the coin I just wouldn't leave any feedback at all, but that's just me.

If they were close, I'd go ahead and give them a 5. But, if I think they were way off and deliberately over-grading I'd tattoo their ass with a 1.

If the photo's are purposely deceptive, i.e. if it looks like a professional shot that hid all the hairlines. I would call them on it.

If they are not dealers and the grade was within 5 points +/- 10 points there is not much you can do unless they have a return policy. They should still get the feedback because we all know better than to buy raw on e-bay.

To me, the most relevant factor of an "accurate description" is if the pictures did a good job of actually showing what the coin looked like. If it did that, I consider it "as described" even if there was some wishful thinking in the text.

I don't care if a seller calls something XF if I think it's VF based on the image (and I bid as such); if the image matches the coin it's "as described" to the extent that I got what I was expecting based on the listing.
  • First before people get the wrong idea. I did leave 5 stars before I even posted here. As for the coin being raw, it was a darkside coin that can't be had slabbed.. and it wasn't a terribly expensive coin. I have little doubt the seller had no intention of decieve. When the coin came today I opened outside as I walked through the house.. and it looked good. Only when I reached my bedroom, which I light with Reveal Bulbs did I start to notice a few tiny milkspots a small patch of hairlines. I am pleased with the coin and the price I paid, but it will never go in my set. Had the coin been aviable locally I would have passed in a heartbeat. I was just curious to see other peoples thoughts on the matter. I actually expect the worse on Ebay.. and when I do get coins I am truly happy with I am pleasantly suprised.

I agree. I think my question would have been better served if I had ask WHEN is it ok to leave 1,2,3, or 4 stars.

To me, accurate description = accurate picture, irregardless of what seller grades coin, don't you just ignore his grade anyways?

  • My opinion I think you are stuck. The grade on a raw coin is nothing but opinion. You saw something you liked and took a chance. It didn't work out in your favor this time. See if the person will accept it back, though you should probably pay for shipping to return it.

It depends on the exact situation.

Scenario A: Suppose they call the coin a 65, and that's what the pictures show. A gash on the coin that drops it to a 63 is hidden in the photo and not mentioned in the description.

Scenario B: Same as A, but the gash was mentioned. They still blew the grade, but you knew what was missing from the photo.

In scenario A, I'd feel deceived, and wouldn't leave a 5. In scenario B, I'd chalk it up to the problems of online coin sales and leave a 5. An accurate description largely depends on whether or not all the pieces you need to make up your own mind (much as you would grade a coin yourself at a show) are there.

  • Like I said, I am content with the coin.. and don't feel like I am stuck with a dog, but I am not thrilled with it. Again, guess what I am asking is at what point a 4 is called for? The fact the coin has milkspots disapoints me, but the fact that I can only see them in 1 of 9 rooms we have leads me to believe that the seller never saw them. Its really not the coin at all come to think of it, its the whole feedback system as it currently is, I know enough sellers to know that its not going to do him any good if I leave less then a 5, which in this case I have no problem with.
