Never ever buy a raw trade dollar off ebay...

....even if the seller has a good story! Fake 1878-CC with story
I very politely contacted this seller and explained it was a fake. Here's his response:
I see nothing that looks like a berry under the eagles claws. I bought this coin as part of as small collection of early American coins 21 years ago. The widow I bought it from said her husband collected them years before. I know that fakes and reproductions are rampant but to the best of my knowledge this is not one of them. I don't think there were many reproductions 40 or more years ago. Thank you for your interest.
And yet there's very clearly a berry under the claw:

And here's the real deal:

and are more then willing to screw the next person in line.
you will probably have to use photoshop to circle the offending berry
and send pics of a good and bad dollar just to knock it into their head
they have a bad coin.
<< <i>That was a berry astute pickup.
groan :-|

I finally see the berry.

I winced when I read that.
That sounds like good advise for most people, but have you followed this advise?

<< <i>I noticed on TDN's dollar, the "CC" is stamped directly under the period in "Grains". Jimmy's and the fake one have the CC stamped to the left of the period. Does that matter?? Different Variety?? >>
There are two mintmark positions for the 1878-CC. 'Well centered' and 'far to the right' [as on my coin].

Also do you happen to have a larger pic of a counterfeit example? I see a dot and a nick under the eagles claw but can't tell from the photo with no experience on what the counterfeit is supposed to look like.

FAKE! FAKE! BEWARE, if he ever tries to sell this!

What about that berry next to the S in GRAINS?

ed to add: I simply do not know enough about the difference between the real one and all the different varieties of the fakes to risk purchasing one.
Would anyone be interested in starting a thread with extreme closeup pictures of the discrepancies? That would be a pretty cool and helpful thread.
<< <i>You know, someone should submit an article to CW, or maybe even write a book, on what to avoid on ebay. Maybe title it, "101 Things to Avoid on Ebay, A guide for the coin collector." You could include everything from this topic's heading to what grading services to avoid. I'd buy it. >>
I'm giving a presentation to the local coin club on that subject in the near future...

I like the idea of the article, possibly a very concise guide on ebay. A website would be very good with close up images of fakes to watch out for. If anyone wanted to do a website I would be willing to do what it takes to get the website listed on the front page of search engines
Unless you are on first name basis with the seller and they have a satifaction guaranteed or 100% refund policy.
<< <i>TDN, what became of that raw Seated Dollar you bought a while back? >>
It's sitting in a flip in the safe deposit box. I haven't done anything with it.
