Vintage basketball prices have increased 25%-50% across the board....

1957-1986 basketball has gone through the roof. Possible explanations?

If I were to guess, I'd say that it has to do with the fact that the NBA is fun to watch again as this has been the most competitive season since the mid 90s. Still, I can't imagine that this is causing people to suddenly start putting together sets from the 70s and 80s, but maybe it is. 61-62 Fleer and 86-87 Fleer are especially hot, along with all of the sets from the 70s. Not just hi grade; mid grade is strong too. Any opinions?

Everyone is sick of the steroid talks in both Baseball and Football and are turning to a more "clean" sport?

Small sized sets, easier to collect and put together. Better bang for the buck, better ratio of HOFs in these set as compared to baseball.

I would assume its because you started buying vintage basketball a few months ago.

No explanation, but it stinks! Couldn't it have waited until I bought the last 3 cards for my 61 Fleer set?!

The NBA is growing in popularity and I think you're starting to see the same effects on basketball cards that we've been seeing on the football side for quite some time. Prices on all the major sports are depressed compared to baseball. That is slowly starting to change. Cheap, high grade HOF'ers in basketball and Hockey are probably good investments right now. I wish I had seen the light on football 5-8 years ago. I'd have built a $100k (today) collection for probably $15-20k back then.
  • I've always thought that football, basketball, and hockey have been undervalued when compared to baseball.

Early football sets are not that expensive to complete in decent condition because of the relative lack of big name superstars pre-1957.

Early basketball is not easy to find, offers great designs, and has a tremendous number of superstars. The 1961-62 Fleer set, for example, is only 66 cards, 37 of which are HOFers, and presents a huge condition challenge due to poor centering. The early 70's sets are also chock full of great HoFers and have great designs.

    Agree, particularly basketball.
