Baseball: Rate your non-players

I'd be interested to hear how fans rate their manager, 3rd base coach, and GM.

We often hear how Jim Leyland and Mike Scoscia are two of the best managers, but many of us don't watch the
Tigers or Angels all year.

Many hear that Theo Epstein is one of the best GM's, but Red Sox fans don't hear of others that are good too. Do non
Red Sox fans know that Boston had one of the worst 3rd base coaches in history recently in Dale Sveum ? Probably not.

Yankee fans know they had one of the best 3rd base coaches in Larry Bowa, but they probably don't know about
any other teams.

Just respond by giving out grades for these three non-player roles.......example (last years Yankees)

Joe Torre B
Larry Bowa A
Brian Cashman B+

If you want to throw in the owner and pitching coach, that is fine too. Please identify your team, because with all the changes
in baseball, some of us don't even know the managers of say Washington, Seattle, or Tampa Bay.

Why was Bowa good and Sveum bad? All I know about Sveum was the ghastly injury he suffered as a player.

Terry Francona- A+ The relationships he has built in the clubhouse is a quality that goes unoticed by many fans yet has a huge effect on the chemistry it takes to win a world series. There are many managers that deserve this credit and Terry Francona is at the top of that list.

From what I watched of the Red Sox and Yankees on MLB.com, I never saw Bowa make a mistake as a coach at 3rd.
Sveum was probably the worst at getting guys thrown out at home plate. He was very wishy washy on when to send
guys and when not to. He totally lost his confidence and thus was making too many bad decisions.

Where was that chemistry when he managed the Phillies?

yup, I watched A LOT of Sox baseball and really didn't like the guy's decision-making (in)abilities at all.
  • All Pirates Front office and coaches=Grades not in yet, too early to tell. Lack of off season moves is not promising.
  • Bobby Cox- A....The guy puts the team in contention for the division every year no matter how many injuries or how weak the pitching is.

Joe Maddon- B-....He's a great player manager so he gets an A in that department. I think you all know the other side of that grade though which drops him down to B- range.

Joe Torre- No clue. I'm not sure how he'll fit in with the Dodgers though. He's used to the Yankee style of things and has dealt with Veterans primarily. The Dodgers on the other hand have tons of young talent like Kemp, Laroche, Loney, Billingsley, Hu, etc. It should be interesting!
  • For the Mariners...

Manager: John McLaren - Really early to tell with not many games under his belt, but I'd give him a B+ at this point. He's definately a BIG improvement over Mike Hargrove, who I would have rated a C- at best. I like McLaren's agressiveness for one thing. I think you'll see the M's be more agressive on the basepaths this year as a result. I predict 60+ SB's for Ichiro.

GM: Bill Bavasi - I'd probably bump him up to a B now that he was actually able to get that Beddard deal done. Before that, he was pretty predictably bad... maybe a C- or worse. I think the Wilkerson pickup was also a good move. We'll see how the fat man Carlos Silva does, but I'm not exactly sold on him yet.

    Base coaches... don't really know.

In general, I think the M's have been bad in the GM & Manager areas the last few years, but appear to be making marked improvements. A step in the right direction I would say.

edmundfitzgerald - noticed you changed your avatar to a BoSox logo.

Do you live in the Boston area?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • I've always liked Ron Jackson. I was said to see him go.
