Wheaties and Indian Heads...difference between "Red" and Regular

Looking over Ebay I have seen many Wheats and Indian Heads with the Red Distinction. In the pictures I am having difficulties seeing a difference between what would appear to be a regular coin and one with the "Red or "RD" distinction. Can someone help explain to me the difference...I would appreciate it! Thanks!

  • A "red" copper coin is one that has not tarnished significantly since its left mint, and still bears the majority of its original copper color (which is kinda a shade of red)

Just keep in mind that quite a bit of the raw stuff on eBay isn't an "original" red.

According to QDB, there are a lot of RD's in slabs that are not original red also. "see section on Matte Proofs"
  • Holdered coins can also go from RD to RB.
