OK, How's this...You have $1,500 free money....what do you look to buy?

Ok, we know about the mad money giveaway on ebay for a few of us. Now, I have $1,500 to spend (and as suggested, I want to do it fast). I have decided to bypass the precious metals. Now, I am going to look for a coin that I normally wouldnt have been able to afford. Now, what do you all think I should get with the $1,500? It HAS to be ONE item...I cannot buy 5 $300 items, 3 $500 items....ONE item.

Personally, I was thinking of something like a '55 DDO. I wanna hear what you guys suggest...remember, $1,500, one item, one shot. I did see a '72 DDO for exactly $1,500, PCGS MS66RD, but it appears the 'RD' is becoming 'RB', so, I dont think that is going to work.

If this was YOUR coupon, what would YOU look for? ANY coin.....gold, small cent, early dollar....lemme hear what you think!

I think you are thinking along the right lines, a key, possibly a key error in the highest grade you can afford. The ones you mentioned, along with a 1909 S VDB or 1914 D graded by PCGS would be on my list.

If it were mine to spend, I'd find a coin I really wanted, even if it were on a dealers web site.
If I found one I wanted on a dealers fixed price list, I'd explain the situation to the dealer and have the dealer put it on Ebay with a "buy it now", and I'd hit it as soon as the auction came up.
This way, I'd not be limited to what may come over Ebay by chance.
    This one
    Or this one
    Or this one
    Or our own RichUhrich
Of course this is because they carry the Seated Coins I collect.
    Your dealer choices may vary.

You get $1500 free money that magically appears as a $1500 of income on next years taxes, so it really is just a little hokus-pokus
  • I would have to go and buy a "lot" of Morgans to VAM...would play out for quite a while and resell any commons....

    I'd be looking at a
    1916-D dime
    or the
    1918/17 nickel.
  • Baley...you ask what my collection is like. This freebie is going towards something I would not normally be able to consider. Hence, my thoughts of a '55 DDO, some sort of key, along those lines.

You could find an "okayish" seated half.
or maybe a proof seated quarter
or maybe a trade dollar in 61 or 62 that
    looks undergraded.

Thats is a lot of awesome blossoms or whatever they call those things.

I would end up with a proof coin. Either Morgan or some form of Barber. If not that a fugio or bar cent or some form of colonial.

A Draped Bust Large Cent in high grade AU from one of the following years; 1802, 1803 or 1807. Be aware that some varieties in these years are a LOT more expensive, but the "common" ones from those years should run ~$1,500. Both a nice design and rare enough to appreciate over time. If you are more interested in the potential investment aspects then buy a key date in whatever series you most like in as high a grade as you can afford. However, let's face it, those will tend to be quite circulated and they just aren't as appealing visually.

  • I think a Saint is the most beautiful design so I would buy a nice, original MS64. I think you can still get a nice common date 64 for 1500.
