  • For us non SCD people, is HK-876 still thought to be an early test piece the coin presses in the new mint?

The medal actually was the first product of the denver mint, struck in 1905 to test new machinery, and some believe, new dies for a $20.00 gold piece. image

    you can teach class anytime

    others can hopefully retire!
  • I was aware of the piece and the story behind it, but I don't really pay attention to SCD.. so wasn't sure if that story was still the story image Great piece of history you have there.

Piece is about the size of a double eagle and was issued as a souvenir at official opening ceremonies of the Mint in early 1906. Despite the statement that "thousands were struck," the medal was unobtainable at the Mint following the ceremonies and was "decidedly scarce" in Denver.

I'll have to research this a bit for self ease of mind as when the Denver Mint was ready to strike coins in Feb 1906 silver was in short supply and not available to the branchmints until later in the year. $10 Eagle and $20 Double Eagles where struck first... but $10 Eagles well before the $20 Double Eagles as I recall? DUIGUY it's neat, yet so naked... not as decorative as your other medals. Hence I guess it's rare as few folks kept or wanted one?

I thought you were going to ask something about Abe Kosoff. I knew him.

I cherry picked one of these tokens out of a $2 junk box at a coin shop up in Denver during the ANA SUmmer Seminar one year.
