  • I think there are plenty of them out there to keep people content and prices steady for a long, long time.

The good news is the edge lettering process has created whole new categories of errors (missing or doubled lettering) for collectors to pursue. The bad news is, I think the extra production process is giving the Mint an additional chance to catch any striking errors before they leave the Mint. I can't recall a single striking error offered in the entire Pres.Buck series. Next year when the edge lettering goes away I think we'll see an increase in traditional errors like broadstrikes, multi-strikes and clipped planchets.

I bought the first clipped GW dollar I saw on eBay for a shade over $100, as I wanted an example for my type set, and I still think that was a screaming bargain. I've seen very few since then and those that have come to market are seeing strong prices.

Here's what I think....the "errors" that have more than a few, so people can think about getting them, will go up a bit, percentage wise, and will be any catalyst on the whole.

The errors that are hard to get, as there are only a few, will likely be priced high, and stay high, but many will just write them off as unattainable and not bother.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I'm pretty sure that edge lettering is not completely going away. The mint is simply moving "In God we Trust" to the obverse, and putting some stars on the edge to take up the extra space.

    Thats my understanding as well.

Additionally, the new SACs will be getting edge lettering, so, it is more probable that edge lettering is here to stay, for now.

HOWEVER, I would very much like to see what happens with GW smoothies in the next 5 to 10 years. It should be fun.

    Sean,

There have been some major mechanical striking errors on
the Presidential series, in addition to the few clips out there.

I have two diff. Presidential dollars missing either the Obv.
or Rev. Manganese Layer, AND they are Plain Edge errors.

I'll have, on my newest Inventory additions (next week), a few
    Multi-Struck/Broadstruck Presidential Dollars.........

Still waiting for the Monroe Quarters, however.....................

Whoops... I swear I read that it was being legislated out of existence. Maybe the difference was that they're somehow applying at at the time of strike and not as a secondary operation?

Fred - if there wree going to be any major striking errors, I figured you (or Mike Byers) would be the guy to have them. I can't wait to see the new list.

My son Justin also has a Washington Dollar (that is NOT plain edge) -missing the rev manganese layer graded by PCGS. A very interesting coin with a bright orange reverse.

    Way to go Fred.
    Great finds.

Now the rest of us want some MEL Jeffersons too!

Anyone seen those Double edge strikes on some Monroes.

Looks kind of fuzzy on the numbers. The letters are a LOT bigger than normal edge lettering.
So maybe "Double Die Edge Lettering" will be coming out?

How many different errors can they make?
