PCGS Variety Attribution Worth it?

I just had a question about PCGS Variety Attribution. Do they actually list the variety on the coin and is it worth the extra $20?

  • To some people who collect by die variety, yes it's worth it. Or if you have a rare variety, it's worth it.
So the usual answer: It depends.

Depends on why you are asking. Is it a coin you want to sell? Is it a coin you want to have in one of your "Variety" Sets?

If answer to above questions are yes, then go for. If answers are "NO" then there are other options. image

I collect die varieties (half cents), so NO! I want to find out the die varieties for myself. Having some company do it for me just eliminates the fun, the challenge, and the education! For the variety fee of five coins or less, just buy the books! You will hopefully learn something.

Depends on the coin...I think $20 is WAY high, especially compared to ICG (flat $5), ANACS ($5 for attribution/$10 for research), and NGC (flat $7)...

why pay someone else to do the job that I will do better than them anyway?
  • PCGS attributed Vams(Especially the more rare things) are almost non-existant in dealer cases at coin shows....so I would say it is probably worth it for them....but I usually see a large number of Vams certified by ANACS (old and new).

Is it worth the extra $20 to have PCGS (or any other TPG) attribute your coin? NO, absolutely not! They almost never get the attribution correct, so why waste your money? It would be an entirely different issue if the TPG's had any sort of consistent record for accuracy, but since they are incorrect at least half of the time, I wouldn't waste your money.

They won't do the varieties I just started collection so it does not matter much.

I agree if you are hard core into varieties then it is worth it. If the coin is just short term in your collection it's probably not worth it unless it is a rare variety worth a premium.
