    Video from mint.

I showed it to the cashier at a large grocery store here and she went on to say that between Chicago and Texas the area is being flooded with counterfeit $100.00 bills!!! They think they are being brought in from Mexico with illegals???

I picked up a bunch from a Bank of America branch last Tuesday. Other than that I haven't really seen many of them used in cash transactions so far.

Fresh from my, now empty, wallet. The old & the new; quick pic style! Probably a dumb question, but why are they dated 2006? image [L=]image[/L]

I don't know why they'd be dated 2006, but thank you for taking the time to post a picture as I was pretty curious as to how these looked.

Some of the casinos here in Vegas have not yet adjusted the validator systems on their slot machines, and those units are not yet accepting the new $5 notes. Given the casinos' relentless efforts to extract as much money as possible from players, I'm confident all the machines will be accepting the colorful fives in the near future.

Cool. I have to go pick some up.

I hate to mention this during the holy Easter weekend, but I tend to put the extra notes from my travels around the world in my bible (which, admittedly, I never read), and whenever I get a really new bill in change, I stick that in there, too. Pretty odd for a guy that attended Catholic school for 16 years. image

Haven't seen any yet! Although I've mostly been using fresh Adams and Jefferson dollar coins I had lying around lately for small purchases.

The guy that's always working at Dunkin Donuts gets a big smile when he sees the new shiny ones. Plus I ran out of patience to save them when I could spend.

It is interesting how the new $5 bills can be found flowing so effortlessly into circulation, whereas you won't even find a golden dollar in your change at the Dollar Store.

Reminds me of a Coin World article.
A girl sent her aunt in England a 5 dollar bill.
It was 1943 and she wrote on the bill--I love you Aunty.
Now in 1965 she is a grown women with family.
The paper boy comes to the door to collect.
She pulls a bill from her purse and hands to her Son.
Just then she noticed writing on the bill.
It was the same $5 she sent her Aunt 20 years before.

  • We need a $5 coin not another "counterfit proof" $5 bill

Like the dollar coin it would never circulate unless you eliminate the $5 bill.

  • The 2006 date has to do with the appointment by Bush of Henry M Paulson in July, 2006. His signature is
on the right hand side of the bill. Unlike coins paper money dates only change when there is a change in
the Treasurer or Secretary of the Treasury.

Usually a change in Treasurer only results in a new series letter like 2003A and 2004A series.
Historically, a design change always resulted in a new series date. The new and old fives being both series 2006 are the only exception I know of.

The old one is dated 2003. The new one is dated 2006. At least the ones I photo'd are.
  • Wow the 5 is HUGE!
