Anyone have experience with Brian Greer Rare Coins?

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭
I've never dealt with him. His website seems....well, he doesn't post pictures and when asked about it he said, "I just don't do scans." I don't know if he's a member on the forums or not. Anybody have good or back luck with him? Thanks

Brian is one of the best in the business. He'll describe any coin for you if you give him a call and his return policy is excellent and hassle-free. I buy from him as often as possible.
  • I bought a half dime from him and was more than happy with the price, service, communication, and the coin itself. Top-notch transaction.

Hmmm, I had heard on this board how great he was to deal with. So, I emailed him about a coin I was seriously interested in. Since I already knew he didn't do images.......
I asked if still available, and to describe it a little bit. Since his description only said Nice. I received no answer, and a few days later it was removed from his site.

Silly me, he did answer by removing it..... I guess.image I have never looked at his site since. Although I'm sure he's a nice guy and one of the best in the business.

Brian Greer is an excellent dealer, in it for the long term, knowledgeable, honest, and fair. He knows seated liberty coins exceedingly well. I would not hesitate to deal with him. Mostly he handles coins I don't collect, but if I decided to collect what he sells, I would deal with him.

I just can't get over not putting up pictures on his website. Or, at the very least, not posting a picture when one is requested. It just seems very odd in this digital world we live in. But that's just me I guess. I'm glad to hear from a number of people what a top-notch guy he is.

more information now that my daughter is napping and I have a chance to write:

Brian is a one-man operation. He is at every major coin show and many, many minor shows. Generally, I expect that he is not available Wed-Sat most weeks. Best way to contact him or find out if he is available is via telephone (Mrs. Greer is a good source of information about Brian, but not about the coins or their availability). E-mail is not the sure-fire way of contacting Brian, as stman pointed out. I used to try to contact him via email, now I just call. Brian also sends out a price list. If you want first shot at his new purchases, the price list is a good choice, as Brian usually doesn't update his prices online until two or three days after updating his price list and mailing it out (his attempt at creating a level playing field for his customers who don't have or use the internet). If you collect coins (especially bust and seated) by die marriage/variety, Brian is an excellent dealer to check on regularly.
  • This can work both ways- I honestly believe that if the coin I bought from him had a pic, it would have been GONE at the price I bought it for. Here is a pic:image

one of the best in the business is Ed Hipps. He doesn't even have a web site! I still seek him out at every show I go to.

I guess I've just been "spoiled" by other dealers. The no pic thing I could get over if I got a decent verbal description of the coin, but when I was told he doesn't do lay-away with first time customers....that kinda puts me SOL. I almost always have to pay by lay-away. Maybe I need to save up for awhile before visiting his site again image

Brian is an outstanding dealer - honest, CONSERVATIVE grading, etc. He's one of the few dealers to whom I've never returned a coin.

There must be something about Seated dealers - seems they live in the era of their coins. Brian didn't even have a web site or send his list via email until recently. Until then, I always looked forward to getting his list via snail mail every couple of months.

I've purchased (I think) 6 or maybe 7 raw coins from Brian over the last 2+ years. IMO he has a great eye for the seated coins I collect. He describes the coins very well and his grading is from right on to conservative. IMO he is a great source for acquiring raw problem free coins. I would highly recommend him.

Brian is one of the best dealers out there. He is honest and quite conservative with his grading and descriptions. Of the numerous coins I have bought from him, I think only one was sent back for return.

I've known Brian for many years. He is a good man and a good coin deaoler, but not computer savvy. Don't hiold that against him, unless you are buying computers rather than coins.

Brian has a computer memory for rare marriages and die states. I have only good things to say about him.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

He is one of the good guys, and one of the hardest working ones too.

He does business the ole fashioned way and offers a healthy return period.

He's not up to snuff on images or scans, and only takes checks no paypal or credit cards.

I've bought many nice Bust and seated coins from him. Highly recommended and great guy to deal with.
  • The biggest problem with Brian Greer if you collect bust and/or seated is that all of these guys who have posted to this thread check his website regularly. When he gets better dates and varieties you'd better have him on speed dial.

I've purchased about two dozen mostly raw, mostly seated coins from Brian. Zero returns and zero overgraded (several undergraded though...).

Trustworthy guy with a great eye.

    I had a similar experience.

Because I hate to buy coins without at least seeing a good photo first, I emailed him a question about a coin I was interested in but never received the courtesy of an answer. Perhaps it had been sold before his site was updated, but because of that experience I don't even check his site anymore.

Most people on this forum seem to vouch for him though, so maybe he only responds to or deals with his friends or "established" customers and has enough (or more than he has time to handle?) business already?

  • Brian is a one man operation. He is very busy and he travels a LOT. He will drop a ball occasionally (particularly an e-mailed to-do). He's left me hanging a couple of times when on an extended road trip. The first time was after I'd already had a number of successful deals with him so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I suspect that if you choose to give him a second chance you will be glad that you did.
