Anyone Buy A Card And Not Really Want It?

I am sure most of us had at one time. On Thursday, I won a PSA 9 1987 Fleer Glossy Bonds, PSA 9 1990 Leaf Thomas and a PSA 9 1989 Fleer Griffey. I mostly collect vintage, but as some of you may know I am buying top cards from the 80's and 90's, both graded and ungraded. Well, to finish my 1987 Fleer set I need to buy a Barry Bonds. Frankly, I can't stand the guy, but he has a place in the history of the game, which makes him part of my collection. I mainly pulled the trigger to get the set done and because his cards are so cheap right now. I paid $18 for the Bonds shipped.

Also, I got the Griffeyfor $8.00 shipped and the Thomas for $11.00 shipped. I was okay with those purchases since I like both of them. I can't believe how cheap the Thomas card is right now. I remember that card was $40 or $50 raw back in the early 90's. It was even in the $20-$25 range during baseball season in a PSA 9.

Does anyone else have a similar experience to share?

Yeah, I bought a 1960 Mantle in PSA 6. I want(ed) a 7 but decided not to wait one second longer (thx. Coors brewing Co.). I like it, I'm not enamored by it, I'll probably upgrade soon. That was my most expensive instance, I have many more but I was a youngster when I did those.

I've purchased stuff for the sole purpose of flipping or trading it before.

    Sure.

Sometimes instead of eating, I feed a "bad day" with an ebay purchase.

My appetite for anything collectable definitely EXCEEDS my budget! Thank God for the credit card!

But, my wife's on my ass - so I'm being careful.

Stone, I've gone to sending Money Orders, the paypal acct. is hers. I've gotten packages 3 days this week and she's getting chippy. I think the next barrage will be sent to my office.

I still do this from time to time... I will win a card I need for one of my sets even through it is not in the condition I really want, for example it is poorly centered or has bad registration. I could understand using it as a place holder if I was close to finishing the set or if it were particularly rare... but sometimes I just get plain stupid like this. I have gotten much better and much more patient over the years, but I still relapse in this regard from time to time.

  • LOL...on eBay, I bid on (and didn't expect to win) a card from one of the guys on here.

About $900 - the most expensive card I've ever won, or ever owned, for that matter.

    Grrrrr......

Yes, I paid for it. Didn't really want it. Sat on it for a year or so before I finally got rid of it.

Collecting my sports heroes, Roger Staubach and Kirby Puckett.
