Star Wars Power of the Force Coins

Hi:

Question for the coin collectors....

In 1984 and 1985 Kenner released collectors coins with the final waves of the vintage Star Wars action figures. These are alluminum coins. It is my understanding that many of these coins were created from some of the franklin mint artists. They are rather spectacular pieces.

I have purchased several unopened, beat up packaged action figures from these waves, as such, the coins are still sealed in the packaging. Although the plastic packing has yellowed over the years.

I would like about 10 of these to be removed, graded and encapsulated. Would these be gradeable? Could I send them in unopened, if I just cut the packaging around the coins?

thanks,
scott

  • Are you sure they are coins? I believe they would need to have a monetary value in some country to be considered an actual coin. They would be medals otherwise.

I'm certain someone else will tell you this, but I will mention that these are not technically coins. They are tokens. I do not know that PCGS certifies tokens such as this since I have never seen any in their holders. I believe ICG at one point would certify pieces such as this, but do not know if they still do so.

  • Hi guys:

thanks for the quick responses! Technically, these would not be coins, as they have no monetary value. In a truer sense, they are medallions.

  • AFA (action figure authority) does grade these. However, in all reality, they know nothing about coins.

I would give them a call. ICG is in flux so they may not at the moment but there's nothing lost from asking.

A little off the subject, but U.S. Mint sculptor engraver Donna Weaver used to design Star Wars figures!

That's pretty cool. Do we know which figures?

  • I guess for the right price, you can find someone to slab just about anything. One would think that original packaging with an item like that would be worth more, like all those 'action figures' in '40 Year Old Virgin', though, this piece looks like the packaging has been cut up with skizzors or sumptin'.

Perhaps just air tites, and have that place (yeah, you guys know...the place that makes specialty holders for coin display) make a specially designed one so you could display them...just a thought...

Cool fact about Donna Weaver....thanx, Artist!
