my pop is way gone now 8 yeras gone lung cancer. but i get calls a lot from people wanting to open another!!
My sister also has a Deli my father basically opened for her a few years before he passed , it is out in Eastern Suffolk county in Rocky Point , :Broadway Deli :
That man could really cook , Italian dishes were his specialty, the most amazing sauce for pasta, my sister has people coming in there early in the morning and instead of your regular morning breakfast they will order pasta dishes .
I lost my old man Jan 4th 2001 but it still seems like only yesterday .
He used to work for the NYC Transit and they used to have to be tested regularly to see if they were fit to be able to stay on the road , they found out he had a bad ticker so instead of forcing him retire , they basically created a ficticious job for him , he used to cook for all the guys in the bus garage @ 129th and Amsterdam ave in Manhattan.
He was able to retire but did not want to , so I thought that was very telling of how they thought of him .
He was a good man, he would give you his last dollar if you needed it .
Loved to play the ponies and pretty much single handidly built Belmont , Aquaduct and the Meadowlands .
When I want to feel close to him I go to the track and play his Birth date numbers , the 2, 1 and the 7 horse .
Surprising how many times I have hit with those numbers !
Gotta love the French Dip, although I can't remember the last time I had a really good one. The roast beef has to be thinly sliced, the sandwich roll is soft and chewy and preferably lightly toasted, and last, but certainly not least, the au jus must be flavorful, without being either too watery or too salty. If anyone knows where to get one of those, I'd buy that for a dollar!

My uncle bought a deli in Lynbrook - close to Broadway and Sunrise Highway - in the 70s - he said he was getting tired of the high cost of food and operation.
On Peninsula Blvd and Mill Rd. is a deli - the Woodrow - been there since 1960 and still going strong while many other deli's have long since gone out of business.

The Club, Reuben and Phiily cheesesteak are some of the more popular ones so far.
And, for me? I never met a sandwich I didn't like!
Happy Easter
