What's worse than an Ebay seller that ends an auction early for a private sale?
What's worse than an Ebay seller that ends an auction early for a private sale to somebody else?
Today, I found out. A friend of mine drove three hours hours today to view a coin that was supposed to close tomorrow. When he got there, the seller told him that he ended the sale and sold the coin privately to somebody else. "Sorry, dude, but I'll show you the rest of the crap if you like", he said. Now my friend has a three hour drive home.
BTW, I would have gone along for the ride if I wasn't sick as a dog today. And I would not have handled it very gracefully if I had been there.

Yes, and there were multiple mentions of the importance of seeing this particular piece. I know because I set up the meeting.

Well, that sucks. Did he go to the guy's house? If so, he's got his address, and although it would probably be wrong, I suppose your friend could always subscribe him to a bunch of magazines...

Why do you assume that the seller was a dealer? He's a collector. You know, one of the "good guys".

Because dealers are sleaze (everybody knows that) and what he did was sleazy, so- well, you fill in the blanks...

Uhhh... (gulp!)- nevermind.
Knowing that the "somebody else" bought if for $10K and sold it for $50K.
Are you kidding? I'd love to think the coin got sold for 10 or 15K! That would make it all worthwhile!

Why? Because the seller left $10K on the table? That's no salve for your friend losing $30K on a flip, unless you find greater joy in someone else's loss than in your own gain.
Who said anything about losing 30K? But you're right, I'd have preferred to see the seller get an extra ten grand and my friend made a few grand too, like it should have been.
