RE: "Worst ebay Auction"

A lurker sent me an email and asked me to post this....
I am a CU Forum "lurker" from the outside and not a member (yet). I can't post so this is why I'm sending you this email.
I'm a coin collector too and I sell sometimes on Ebay as packwagman.
I was ROFL when I read this thread! (Worst Ebay Auction?)
I hope you will find the following information interesting and you are welcome to share it too!
So here goes:
So last night I HAD to ask "special " luther a question or two as you did ...
I asked: How come the obverse and reverse look so different? Is this the coin you are selling?
He responded: "no the pictures on here are not my coin they are from yahoo we tryed to put a pic of ours on there but we couldnt cause it was too blurry our coin in in very good condition though"
I asked: Why do you think it is so valuable?
He responded: "if you actually go to pcgs.com you will find that this is the actualy value of the coin"
I asked: How do I know what this coin looks like and that it is certified by PCGS?
He responded: " they know that the coin looks just like this mine is certified because i got it from a coin collector adn i guarantee that its in good condition"
I asked: Can you give me a PCGS certification#?
He responded: "2711"
I asked: What does that mean? Is that the certification#?
He responded: "yes it is"
I asked: If you don't have a photo of the coin to show how do I know what grade and condition it is?
He responded: "it is in very good condition"
I asked: "Are you just plain crazy? They made over 600,000,000 of these coins in 1943 and they are not worth this much!
He responded: "im not crazy i am actually telling the truth"
I asked: "OK, so if you think these are worth so much how about I set up an auction for you on ebay and you buy it now for $900? Then you can turn around and sell it for $1,000 and make a quick $100!
He responded: " whatever leave me alone if you think you can do better than go ahead"
Well I gave up then .... The first auction ended $1 short of reserve and he has another one with the same(?) coin up now ... No bids, what a suprise!

But what I really want is the 1951 (my birth year!) Shiny Lincoln Penny he has up for sale at $950 ... I'll just have to snipe it away from e***9 .... but wait, maybe I can find it on Yahoo for less!
Description: This bid is on a 1951 Lincoln Wheat Penny. This penny is in very good condition. It is well worth the money. Very Valuable. Thank you for looking. Happy Bidding.

What a DA! Ya'll keep a CU posse eye on this guy ... I don't think he is dangerous, nobody with that kind of money is as dumb as he is ... just stupid and embarrising to the coin collecting hobby!
Later, hope to be able to post on the forum in the future.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

Also, Gene really got our special friend to open up. I asked him a question via eBay, and he replied simply "Leave me alone".
The newly listed auctions don't have a reserve price.
I like the fact that his return policy offers a refund for 'merchandise credit'.
Soon, he will go away, once he sees his paypal bill. [edit] I meant eBay bill. This one will never see a paypal charge, I suspect.
<< <i>No, that bid isn't a shill. Luthor set up his first auctions with a reserve price above the already high starting bids. Some bid on that auction just to irritate special luther. >>
How would the bidder know what the reserve was? Unless they e-mailed Luther and he told them....either way, it's pretty suspect.
Someone bid and sure enough, the starting amount was underneath the reserve. As expected.
I think the only way to list a reserve price is to have it above the starting bid...so there is no harm in placing that starting bid if there is a reserve.
Then, later, the seller reduced the reserve price. To the seller's frustration, that did not convert the first bid into a winning bid, as it was not a winning bid at the time.
I think you have to have seen these auctions over time to see a more complete story. I don't think the seller is at the sophistication of shill bids yet.

Not entirely suspect. I almost always ask the seller what his reserve is before bidding and if the reserve is above what I am willing to pay, I just don't bid on it and move on to the next item.
It saves me a lot of time

This will be Kinda Hard To Do Since Yahoo Auctions No Longer Exist in the U.S. For quite Some Time Now. Ray in Florida..

You can't lower reserves and "convert" a bid to a winning bid. I guess Luther found that out. Luther's definitely up to something screwing around with the reserves and whatnot. Anybody who bids on the items just to irritate Luther is playing with fire.
It's no crime to be crazy.

<< <i>Haha, I got a response to my e-mail to him. He said I need to check the PCGS website because that's where he got the value. I tried to explain to him that his coin is not a PCGS MS67RD. We'll see what he says. His e-mail name is hilarious: teen angel. I wonder if it's a kid just screwing around. >>
Well, he does own a copy of 'Glitter'....
