Have you ever been given a stash of old coins ..................

............ by an older relative or alternatively inherited old coins from a deceased relative?

If so what did you receive, do you still have them and if not, what did you do with them?

For me, I received an 1890 CC Morgan (VG-F) from my aunt after she died; and my wife's aunt a few years ago gave a number of old US coins and World coins (late 1800's to 1950's) to our family (and since I am the only collector in the family, I looked through them and set them aside for my kids). In the coins given by my wife's aunt, the best one is a 1910 P cent that is AU, with lots of eye appeal.

The parents of a girl I dated once knew I was a coin collector and showed me a small jar of Indian Cents a relative gave to them. When I looked at it I saw the reverse of one with a little S at 6 o'clock....turned it over and it was a 1908, not a 9. Still a cool find though.

I got a pile of Morgans that my Dad had when he was a kid. He had wrapped them in tissue and stashed them in the rafters in the basement of his childhood home. He told my Grandfather about them years ago, to which he said "Bull, I would have know if something like that was in my house". My Dad took him downstairs reached up into one of the rafters and pulled them out. In any case he gave them to me and I have kept them for sentimental reasons.

There were only eight of them and they were common dates and, of course, well worn. I have them in plastic snap-together holders with a sharpie marker code on them. Really nothing special to the world of numismatics but like I had mentioned, a small piece of my Dad's childhood that I could share and therefore sentimental.

I will be inheriting a large stash of stuff in the not too distant future - everything from hundreds of bank rolls of Lincoln cents to complete sets of classic commems and Walkers to a full run of proof AGEs.

  • Father in law gave me a gallon bag full of silver. Wasn't sure to what was in it when he handed it to me. But once I opened it was pretty surprised. Had about 1 roll of barber dimes, a few standing liberty quarters, couple dozen V nicks...about 10-15 indian heads, assortment of foreign coinage and a few liberty halves. And upon going thru the dates found the best surprise in the bag.

    A 1912-s V nickle.

I asked him if he would like the coins back after I went thru them and he said no. I went on to tell him what I had found and the red book value at that time(2005). And he was quite surprised, but he still refused. I said thanks again..and left it at that.

putting together a MS 60 and up Morgan set....60% complete...otlher 40% probably take the rest of the decade!
  • When my Dad passed I was given the responsibility of selling off his collection. It consisted of a raw Morgan Dansco album mostly filled.
Alot of PCGS proof state quarters, about 10 PCGS Wisconsin hi/lo leaf quarter sets. Also a bunch of slabbed and raw error coins. This list
is just off the top of my head there is alot more. I was allowed to keep what I wanted and sold the rest. I still have alot to sell but Mom
was abal to beef up the bank account with what was sold.
  • Yes, from my grandfather. Mostly common date/grade stuff with a few "keepers". I have kept almost everything.

Yes...my grandparents had a safe deposit box with some coins in it. I was asked to go through them and see if they had any value after my grandfather passed on in 1995 (my grandmother died in 1988). There were $2 bills (1976), bicentennial coins, silver certificates, and some 90% silver coins, but nothing of real monetary value. I helped my aunts divide it up between them and my dad and my uncle, and was given some of it as well. I still have it- a few coins and a $2 bill. Before he died, my grandfather gave me a circulated 1921 Morgan which I still have. I used it for the ilikecoins.com logo and t-shirt...

Yes, a large number from my grandfather. At least 100 Indian head cents (including an 1869), 20 cent piece, large cents, a half dime, seated liberty half dollars, 2 cent pieces, various Canadian and Mexican coins. Spanish coins from the 1790s, Chinese "hole" coins, various European countries etc. Very cool stuff to a 14 year kid. I still have most of it. I believe they were collected right out of circulation long ago as they originally came in a large bag just jumbled all together. A couple of hundred coins in all.

My Grandfather left me numerous coins....mostly silver from the mid 1850's too 1964. They are ultimately the reason why I have become interested in coins and joined this forum. Most are in worn condition but there are certainly some keepers. Although all of them are keeper's to me.
