Jeff Nickel Experts - Opinion on 1964 DD Proof

I've been selling a lot of single items to convert to Morgans and came across a nickel I bought on eBay from John Wexler back in the mid 1990s. It's a raw 1964 proof, still in the original 2x2 stapled since I bought it. John had labled it as doubled die WDDO-022 and WDDR-082. The doubling is on Liberty, star and date, and on the reverse on USA and EPU.

Your comments on its worthiness to submit would be most welcome. Here's some pics:

There almost appears to be tripling on the States:

As you can tell from the number assigned to the coin, there were MANY doubled dies for the years 1963 and 1964. I'm not sure, but most were probably on the reverse, and most are pretty close spreads and not very pronounced. I have owned a couple of doubled die proofs for the years, but when I sold them, only got around $10 apiece or so even when slabbed. But that has been a few years ago.

Your's has a nicer spread; I am not sure how common or scarce it is. But if you are intending to sell it, I doubt it would be worthwhile to get it slabbed, due to the lack of demand for these years.

OK, so the Wexler # indicates the number of DDs. I'm not familiar with the code and now it makes sense. PCGS doesn't list any, and ANACS has listings for a lot of DD varieties. But I don't know how to match up this one with their pops. They do show a DDO and DDR but not sure of the die comparison with Wexler's code. Thanks.

Edited to change NGC to ANACS.

  • From the small bits of the nickel I can see I'm guessing it wouldn't grade super high. A PR 69 DCAM doubled die coin would be worth slabbing and would add value.

Carl, I don't know if makes much difference, but the photos were shot through the acetate window of the 2x2 using a CoinScope. It seems to pick up everything on the acetate.

One other thing I forgot to mention was the tripled appearance on the bottoms of the letters of UNITED and STATES. Some other people on another board said they hadn't seen anything like that on a 1964 proof. Here's a pic:
