Bazooka vs Milk Duds boxes,, surprising results

I was going through the pop. reports for graded Bazooka complete box results (from different yrs.) and found only 1 graded complete box from all those different yrs. (1965)

Then i checked out the Milk Duds boxes from 1971, There was a total of 629 graded boxes from just that one year !!

That sounds too strange to be true. Anyone care to venture a guess why those numbers are so completely lopsided ??

And i always liked the Bazooka boxes better anyway,, much more colorful

Somebody probably found an unused stash somewhere.

Aren't '68 Topps the same way? Certain 9's are worth hardly anything because of a case find a few years ago?

Having had over 300 of the Milk Duds boxes graded, I believe that there were certainly unused/unfolded boxes that made their way into the hobby. Almost 100% of my boxes did not have milk dud goop on them.

That tells me that many cartons went out the back door at the factory b4 they were used.

By 1971 many collectors were starting to hoard stuff in original and sometimes unused condition knowing there would be a premium on these in the future. Same thing with unused Hostess Boxes of the mid 1970s. Early Star Wars figures still in blister packs, etc.

PS In the early 1970s you could still write Red Heart Dog Food and receive their 1954 cards in the mail...., or Kelloggs complete sets by mail, and many early collector stocked up on these.
  • OK, maybe that explains the Milk Duds side of it,,,, but what about the total lack of Bazooka boxes being graded ?

    Just coincidence ?

There are a good number of Bazooka boxes out there, but no idiot like me getting them graded. image

Frank, on the Red Hearts wasn't that true only of the Blues and Greens? I remember at shows in the mid '70's everyone had those in pristine condition dirt cheap but the red's were much harder to find, and usually not in as good shape.

Is it possible that there are more milk dud boxes graded than bazookas due to the fact that PSA wouldn't grade the bigger boxes until recently?

    Hey Lee, hope you're well!
