Postal issue, any suggestions appreciated

I had an ebay client buy some items for $511.00 and I shipped them via USPS Priority Mail with insurance, delivery confirmation and signature confirmation. I shipped them Feb 11 and haven't heard from the buyer so I just assumed he got them. However, when I woke up this morning, he emailed me and asked "where in the hell" his package was, that this "wasn't like me." . I used paypal shipping so I went to look and sure enough, this is the info I find:

So evidently, they made an attempt to deliver, and left a notice, but he never went to pick it up. I emailed him and told him to go get his package from the post office and not to cuss me again. However, once he went to the post office, they tell him that they would have shipped it back to the sender (me) by now since it was unclaimed ( I bet they used the standard line of "If its not picked up in 15 days it is returned",and I'd be willing to wager that they didn't even look for it). I've never gotten it back. I immediately went to my local post office to check and they said no they didn't have it (I'm a frequent client of our PO and they all know me and generally bend head over heels to help) and they believe it is at the PO in CA because it hasn't been "scanned" to be returned to me. Thus, I don't know what to do. Package was insured for $500.00, although the contents were worth $511.00. If I file a claim, will they find my package and deliver it to my client?? Is there anywhere that someone higher up with the post office can check to see where it is at?? Might it be at some type of regional facility or something?? Where do they send the unclaimed packages? My return address was clearly on the mailing label as it is the standard mailing labels generated by paypal shipping.

My client is one of the major dealers in entertainment autographs that buys $1,000's of dollars a year of graphs from me, so I don't think he is trying to scam me, he was just frustrated that he hadn't gotten them yet, and hasn't contacted me sooner because he knows I'm always reliable. I had almost decided to tell him I wouldn't supply him anymore because of the tone of his first email, but then I realized that I probably would have been frustrated as well, and that if I cut him off, that would only hurt me as well. Never good business sense to cut off a client that pays quickly and buys a steady stream and is generally friendly and good natured.

Anyone have suggestions on how to find my package?

The station manager or the PM at your station will
help with the hunt, if you ask him/her personally.
Tell them it is a time-critical delivery and that you
are going to lose a good customer if the problem
    is not solved quickly.

Ask your customer to be patient. If he won't, you
might as well refund him. As long as he believes you
are going to solve the problem, I do not know why
    he would not be patient.

Either your customer or his carrier caused the problem.
The carrier either did not leave a pick-up notice, OR
your customer (or somebody at his addy) misplaced it.

The return of packages is one of the lowest priorities in the postal world. They get to them whenever the get a chance, and the more stops it makes, the longer the wait. Have the postmaster in your branch rattle some cages, he is the only one who has the inside postal tracking capabilities. Someone knows where it is, they just aren't concerned about it.

In the meantime email your customer the info that you posted here, and let him know you are working on it from your end, but he may want to talk to the Postmaster on his end, just to make sure it isn't still there. It maybe closer to him than he thinks. Good luck!

I had some ass-clown do this to me for 2 weeks.

Kept screaming "where is my package???" and it was sitting at his post office, they attempted delivery multiple times.

This finally worked out. My client went back to the PO yesterday and got it. Here's the message he emailed me today:

    "What a fight
They argued and argued that there was NO WAY it would still be there even if they did screw up and just like YOU said we demanded a manager who "suddenly found it"
This is very disturbing if you understood how many packages a DAY I get here
    Anyway thanks for your help
I love the pieces form you - as usual
Hope I wasnt toooo much of a pain in the ass
    Best
    Kevin"

I had just offered to refund him three days ago even though it wasn't my fault and I was going to take it up with the post office. Worked out well afterall. He got his package, and I kept one of my good clients.

I'm glad it all got figured out! image

I for one, can vouch for the fact that mail carriers don't always leave notices. A couple months ago, I went to my local post office to pick up a package that my carrier had tried to deliver (and that I received a notice for). When the clerk came back with it, she also had another package that had been sitting in the post office for around a week, and that I had no idea was even there, since I was never notified. I just lucked out in that I got two packages within a week or so that had to be signed for.
