We end about 1 out of every 100 auctions we list, but NEVER because the auction isn't seeing action. Usually it's because of a mistake in the listing, or because we sold the coin because it was listed elsewhere without realizing it, or because we mis counted how many we had in the case of a Dutch Auction. Right now we have a Dutch for 50 Bald Eagle $ in NGC PF70 that last I looked was bid at only $55 or so, it ends tomorrow night and the going rate is $150-$200. I could care less. We take the good with the bad. But as a volume seller, we need the option to end auctions with or without bids to avoid massive confusion and disappointment in some circumstances.

I'll do almost anything to hose Ebay (legally), but won't do things that will intentionally piss off my customer base. Ending auctions early to sell to an interested party is accepted business practice on Ebay.

I'd like ebay to include an option for the seller that if an item does not reach 70 or 80% of its value that the auction would automatically end. Or let the auction run it's course (similar to the reserves used in Teletrade) and if the bidding price at the end of the auction doesn't meet 70 or 80% of its value, there is no sale. This reasoning would disallow the premature closings of those auctions that fail to garnish any activity. It's ludicrous for ebay or anyone to think that a seller should take a major lose due to a lack of interest in a coin.
Ebay needs to take note here, they could benefit from it.

Isn't what you're referring to a reserve? Unfortunately, there are two problems with that:

1. Ebay fees are pretty high for reserve auctions.
2. Lots of buyers won't bother with reserve auctions because many sellers set the reserve too high.

That probably didn't read right but if ebay sets it up like I've suggested there would be no need for a reserve. That is, if there is a reliable source for coin values.

Many ebay sellers accept items on consignment..how would you like it if you consigned YOUR coin to a dealer who didn't pull it from an auction where there was a good chance that it would sell for a fraction of its value? All auctions have a clause in the terms that the lot can be withdrawn at any time, for any (or no) reason. I have withdrawn lots only in case of uncorrectable listing errors, but no seller should be expected to give his coins away for under cost.

I have had people call me on my 800 number at my expense to ask what the reserve is..then told me they planned to
steal it for the reserve with a snipe bid.....

I hate the pullers!!!!! Let it run its course. Unless a mistake is made in the listing i let her rip. Sold some stuff incrediblly low and some stuff for crazy money. I figure it evens out in the end. Makes me a little nervous at times with a 3500 dollar coin and a 100 dollar bid with 4 hours to go. I hate the bid jackers my self. I have seen quite a few coins that i have lost being resold a week or months later by the same seller. Amazing!!
