Picked up another Geo.III 1/2 penny

This is an 1799 in MS65, I like the obverse look a lot. Seller said it's about 40% red remaining even though NGC has it as a brown.




It has a crack in the slab on the reverse, may try to send it in for an upgrade review and get the slab replaced.

Nice coin. About 5 years or so ago, NGC changed their BN and RB designations. Coins with about 5% red used to get the RB. Now the coin has to have significantly more red in it to get the RB.

From your image it doesn't look 40% red to me. I think NGC will still call that BN if it is resubmitted for designation review. Just my opinion for what it is worth.

I'll go even farther than that: In order to get an "RB" designation out of NGC, a coin has to look damned near full red.

They are incredibly stingy with RB designations.

Edit: If the coin looks like that in hand, it's a hands-down BN at NGC, no doubt about it.

hands down BR at NGC. could also have some non-brown toning which will also get you an automatic BR designation at NGC.

interesting partial clash on the reverse just under Britannia's arm...

Good point Cecil. A nicely blue toned coin also is BN at NGC.

I like the one you showed Coinpictures, a lot of these I've looked at have been kind of spotty, that one looks nice.

both coins are really nice!!!

had to wait until I got home to the better monitor - Britannia on the first coin looks like she has some blue highlights on the arms, leg and shield. it's really hard to capture the blue that shows on these coppers, but if there is blue, like I said before - that's an automatic brown designation (even if the coin is full red otherwise!).

Yes, I agree with the above. Unfortunately by calling coins with substantial mint red in them "BN" they do tend to detract from the sight unseen coins. I know that I have some of the earlier Vicky copper pennies that have substantial and beautiful original red highlights and are clearly superior to coins that are truly just brown to appearance. I can also think of the MS 62 BN 1860/59 that is in their census that was in the Colin Adams collection. This coin should in my opinion clearly be a 63 RB, even qualifying for a star designation if they do these on foreign and is a glaring example of the problem with the newere RB and BN deisgnations.
