What grades would you personally be looking for?

I'm sure a bunch of you here have been collecting graded cards far longer than I. So I'm hoping you could throw your opinions at me. I am well aware that what I'm about to ask really falls on "personal preference" - but I'd like to hear what you all think.

I know the typical factors in choosing a grade are affordability, pop. report etc. I'm just curious to hear from some of you, how you think. I'm asking because I am unsure of the answer myself. Do I hold out and wait for/save for a PSA 8 1963 Rose ($1800-$2000)? Or do I go ahead and look for a realy nice looking 7?

As much as I like to have the best, I am trying to reason with myself and convince myself that PSA 7's are good to image

Here's what I was thinking for each Rose card...LMK what you think.

If this was you, how would you go about it? Would you make ANY changes to the list below as far as the grades are concerned?

Edited list. How's that look? Would make for a really nice collection?

With a popular player like Pete Rose, I would buy the nicest looking card of each year that I could afford. The grade doesn't matter as much as the eye appeal - a nice 7 rather than an ugly 8.

Then if you find something nicer when you have a couple extra bucks, you upgrade. There's always a market for nice pete rose cards.

I like your list, but don't be afraid to settle for a nice card of a grade lower.

PSA 7's are nice cards, especially with those 60's issues. I think you list would make a great set.

Also, I know you stated no interest in 10's, but I imagine 10's of 85, and 87-89 would not be too pricey, and I would consider them.

I have been trying to accomplish the same goal over the past 6 months and have found that alot of 7's are as nice as 8's. Also I started picking up 9 o/c because of eye appeal. Here are a couple of my finds. The raw Rose was a 6. I bought it as a 6 cracked it and it still came back a 6. Paid 600 for the Rookie and 175 for the 1967. Good Luck

  • Thanks for chiming in guys. I appreciate the advice. I agree, I would love to have 85-89 in PSA 10. I just saw a PSA 10 86 record breaker go for almost $100. Not the end of the world, but still pricey.

Well, I need to really sit down and think of how I'd like my collection to look and which grades I want. Keep the advice coming and I will keep you all posted as I progress.

    Thanks

The 1968 isn't too hard in PSA 8. The 1976 in PSA 9 fetches a premium. Nice 8's are a better value for the 76. Best of luck.

I don't like the (OC) qualifier, but I've bought some nice and reasonably price Mint 9 (OC) just because of eye appeal. It really depends on the design of the card. Seems that thin boarder cards don't look that bad OC. Always nice to have any card from the 60's with razor shape corners and great gloss.

You should get PSA 10's for the Rookie and 1971 cards.
  • mrmint23,

    That's a gorgeous '63...and it was a 6? I wouldn't mind finding a 6 or 7 that centered. Thanks for sharing image

  • I 'm doing a set of Clemente, with prices on his cards being high I go with eye appeal more than the grade.Like was said previously there will always be people looking to buy these cards so i'll upgrade when possible. It takes a bit of searching but you can find nice mid grade cards that look good.

i too have often thought about this, i am try to get a aaron rookie, and saving some money for it now, do i save longer and get a higher grade????
i like 7 in most of the 60's stuff, still reasonable in price, but still a very nice card.even a nice 6
early 80's i try for 9's mid and later 80's try for 10's , but some of the cards do get pricey.
plenty of 9's out there that i can't tell the diff from a 10

    good luck with your dilemma
