My mom lived in his neighborhood when he was growing up (norwood ma) and used to talk about him digging graves in high school. I was a Pirates fan when he played there and he was one of my favorites.

Pure coincidence, I got this in the mail today! I guess his auto changed a little since the early 70s

Nice card, I hope the rest of the team comes thru for you!

Norwood , MA! They were our archrival's in high school (mine was Walpole High). I believe Hebner's family still owns a liquor store in Walpole. He was one of those local legend type guys. Have not been there in a long time.

I have a feeling this thread is going to be very populated soon. I joined www.sportscollectors.net, It worth every penny, just to read some of the funny stories about getting messages back from certain players.

I never though I would never be so excited to see my own sloppy handwriting on an envelope. Recieved today a great TTM signer Larry Bowa.

  • I like how Bowa signed his card!

I remember in 1984 I worked for the Cubs and was dugout and field security for them before moving to the front office. Richie was playing catch before a game, I think with Ryne Sandberg in front of the Cubs dugout when he was distracted and was not paying attention to playing catch. Ryno threw the ball and nailed Hebner right above the eye in front of all the fans who were begging for autographs. He ran to the clubhouse and had a nice knot on his head. I went to the clubhouse for something and asked him how his forehead was and he looked at me like a 10 year old kid with a smile on his face and said "did you see that?". Seemed he was embarrassed and proud all at the same time. He was always a real good guy and seemed really down to earth.

The real funny part about this thread is its like old home week as all the TTM autographs you are posting are guys that I knew back in the day. And the weirder thing is the one TTM autograph from a basketball player is one I have a connection to as well....Stacy King's wife was my 1st manager at the place I now work. He stopped in a few times and was also a pretty good guy!

I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

It was agreat time and a great job really. I started as bleacher security right out of high school in 1982 and was given the great job of field/dugout security for 1984/85. I then went to the front office and worked for 3 more years.

I really wished I had written down everything I experienced back then but never did...being young and stupid! I have some great stories and some even better pictures...nothing bad though!! just some unique stuff.

I do remember a very hot summer day and Jody Davis came off the field just drenched from sweat during the middle innings of the ball game. I asked him how many pounds he loses each day he plays behind the plate and he said he loses about 10-15 pounds per day. He then went on to say, with a laugh that he puts it all back on that night with Budweiser!! Jody was a good ole boy and one of the most genuine people you would ever want to meet..unlike his teammate Mr Buckner... but thats another story!!

PM me anytime you want. or email me at andy.white63@gmail.com

Kind of a weird one today. Sent one 1985 Topps to the Sarge and recieved it back with a signed 1976 Topps.

EDIT: Ironic to say I found the owner of the 1976 Topps and was able to get it to him the hobby world is a small one.
