U.S. Mint returns question

I assume that some board members have returned damaged goods, etc, to the mint for either exchange or for refund. What kind of time frame did you experience and did you get any notification of their actions prior to the end of the experience?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

  • Use delivery confirmation and when you get notice that your items have been returned, call and follow up. Otherwise, it could literally take months before you see a credit.

You may be better off just listing it for sale on ebay and hope you break even (or preferably do better).

  • Good info, unfortunately, I have already mailed the two coins back, insured, but not DC'd.

I doubt that shipping will be refunded due to this section on the mint site:

    Returns, Replacements, and Exchanges

If for any reason within 30 days of receiving your product you are dissatisfied with your purchase, return the entire product for refund or replacement. Shipping charges will not be refunded.
The United States Mint will not accept partial returns nor will it issue partial refunds. For example, if you receive a United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ where one coin is in unacceptable condition, you must return the entire Proof Set, not just the one coin, to receive a refund.
To return your product, use the reverse side of your packing slip to let us know why you decided to return your item(s) and your desired resolution (replacement, refund, or exchange) for each item. Use the provided return label or address your package to:

Wonder how new that is? The few times I have done returns, including last year for some really munged up prez proofs, I received shipping refunds ON THE RETURN to them (not the shipping charges TO me though).....ya know, that may be what they mean. So, you get the $8 you use to return to them, but you don't get the $4.95 it cost to get to you.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I had not thought of it in that way. You may, indeed be correct, Bochi. Time will tell, I guess.

Just received another order of Monroe First Spouse gold coins today. The proof looked nice, but the uncirculated had a fairly large crack in the plastic case that holds the actual coin. The coin itself appears fine. Still thinking of doing a return on this since it's not like these things are sold out and I rather my order be perfect given the price.

For those of you that have done returns before, do I need to call first? I'm just going to ask for an exchange for a new one. Also, if I do call, is it worth pressing them to reimburse my shipping costs? I mean I spend a lot with the mint each year, I would like to think they would credit me $7-8 to ship back one of their screw ups. Something tells me they don't care though.

    Thank you in advance. image

Once they receive your package, it takes about two weeks before you will get an email saying "Return Conf. - Order #2780XXXX" that means the mint has processed the return. If you asked for a refund, you will get an email about a week or two later "Credit Ack. - Order #2780XXXX" About a week after that, you will get a credit on your credit card.

If you asked for an exchange, the mint will charge your credit card about two weeks before they issue you a refund so if it was expensive, make sure you have room on the CC.

If it was damaged, keep your receipt from the post office for the return postage. Call the mint and tell them you want to be reimbursed for the shipping and they may or may not have you fax in your receipt. They will send you a check for that amount.

    Good luck.

I not only return the item with the "return form" but also attach a copy of the origianl invoice and mark in larger letters "Return for Refund to CC" as they have held my refund for over a month and then I called them, whereas they said "Oh, we were waiting for the final word to refund your money!"
It takes time either way, but do call to check.
I always send registered back to them - more expensive but I want to make darn sure it gets there!

Hold on a sec... if I send back a $600 coin for an exchange (which is already paid for in full), they will charge me for another coin, and then a few weeks later, refund the original??? That's insane!!!! Please confirm.

Correct! They will charge you for the New one then credit you (slowly) for the returned coin! Ouch.

This was my experience as well, which I don't think was bad. Have patience, that's all.

  • Well, Fedex delivered the replacement coins today...they look very nice. All in all, not a bad turnaround. They have also credited me for the 6 PF ASE's that they did not ship and they are on the original order as "returned" and replacements are "on backorder". I guess if that makes them happy, go for it. As long as I get my coins!image

The MINT is the MINT! They do it their way, like no other.
I am happy you got your coins. I have been frustrated with their policies or lack thereof yet am typically happy with their products as I have found the quality to be OK.
I have been nervous about their return policy and found attempts at charging my CC for two rather than the one Platinum Anniversry Set I ordered a bit discomforting.
They worked very hard at re-charging my CC a number of times (over three) after I returned the SET, with little warning (actually none) then seemed confused as to why that happened ("wow, i have never seen that before") leading me to ONLY ask for Refunds and never exchanges so to protect myself from multiple charges and little accountability.
So, happy days to those that have succeeded!\Miles

Thanks for the info Miles. I think I'm just going to do a return on my First Spouse coin and wait until my card is credited back. Then I'll just order a new one since I'm confident they won't be sold out of these then, if ever. Thanks again for the heads up.

Mailed back my First Spouse coin this afternoon via Priority Mail w/ insurance (almost $15!!). All that was wrong was that the plastic capsule holding the coin was cracked all the way across, the coin looked fine. But for $600, I expect it to be perfect. When I called the Mint this morning to get info on a return the told me that they couldn't give me a credit or anything for my shipping costs even though it was their mistake (figured it was worth a shot). Oh well. They did confirm that the coin I returned will be credited back to my credit card, then I would be charged for a new one (they better not charge me shipping again!). They didn't mention that I will probably get charged for the new one before I get the refund but I'm prepared for that thanks to you guys! What a pain! Will keep you posted on their turn around time in case anyone is interested. Just hope the Monroe First Spouse doesn't sell out until I get my new one image

Others say if you call after the return is processed they will refund your return shipping.
