Will Card + Memorabilia Prices Rise/Decline In 2008/09 ?

.....................................................................

Last Thursday, BSC was trading near $60.00.

Last Friday, BSC opened at $53 and closed at $30.

Tomorrow morning, it will open at $2.00. (YES........... two-dollars).

........................................................................

I suspect that card and memorabilia buyers with dry-powder
will find ALOT of bargains during the rest of 2008.

By next Friday, cash might be in BIG demand.

Storm - I stink at this kind of stuff - but I wouldn't be surprised to see some dumping of stuff and thus a slight drop.

My gut says that it may not affect the higher end of the hobby since those kind of people always find money for their hobby?

    Just my bad guess.

A general statement - "Quality seems to always trump a sagging economy" - if ya know what I mean?

I am trading all of my cards to rube for guns and ammo. I am stocking up for the end. Today people are robbing McDonald's for the money, in 08/09 people will be robbing McDonald's for the food.

"...people will be robbing McDonald's for the food. "

I am convinced that could be true.

My parents and grandparents gave me thousands of
"Great Depression" stories. The thing most of the
stories had in common was people with "HOPE."

I am seeing ALOT of folks with no hope. A defeated
    population of desperate souls.

Folks who look at their 401(k) at the end of next week
may want to buy ammo and rent a gun.

  • Wow! I read your post and then went and read the news to see what was up. After reading about BSC and the related stories, I am convinced that this is going to be an ugly, ugly Monday in the markets. I'm afraid your last line may be way too true, Storm.

As to it's effect on cards? Well, I just decided to not bid on two auctions I was watching tonight. I may need that money very, very soon.

In regards to the prices, my immediate thought is that we'll see little change. People that have the cash at their disposal will keep the items selling. People that don't have the money will keep putting things on credit. Granted, that's just my immediate thought. Either way, the times are definitely keeping me concerned.
  • Everything will be down this year for many reasons. First of all in the stock market the Fed is clueless. Their actions show how we got into this mess to start with. I wish they would just back away and let the market reach a natural bottom that it can rebound from, instead of artificially pumping it up. By cutting the rates not only have they raised inflation, it has actually raised the average mortgage rate.

When the Bear Stearns CEO says there is no problem with liquidity in an interview, then the next day the shares tank 50%, and then the next day the company is basically bankrupt it doesn't inspire confidence.

There will be a trickle down effect. When people have less money in their pocket then collectibles are not a priority over a house and food.
You can already seen the trickle down effect in most ebay sales across the board, and not just collectibles.

At first it was almost funny what you said - but then the harsh reality hit me.

Yes - the gas price alone is alarming. We're being squeezed.

And if Americans were to drive less to affect the supply and demand, it would hit us in the ass in another way. Just think of all the people affected if everyone decided to "not" take a vacation this summer?

Let's just try to keep a positive attitude and hope for the best - since that's all we can do.

Bobby from VCP posted on another board that listings are way up (people getting rid of stuff) and prices being down.

WELL SAID. the Bear Stearns bullspit was esp. hard to swallow...as the day before they calmed, and soothed and reassured. Lying pr1cks. bottom line is we cant bail out ALL of wall street. There will be blood in the streets soon.

Some will go up, some will go down...
