Kirk Gibson and his legendary homer...

Hey all,

I know this is a tad off-topic, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any uncommon, uncirculated photographs of Kirk Gibson's homer in the '88 series. I am to do a painting of it for a commission, and I'm not crazy about the images we've all come to see. I would love to get something of him rounding the bases with the big stadium behind, and though I have checked corbis, getty, SI, and APImages, I can't seem to find what I want. Additionally, I would love to know what both of the outfield scoreboards said right after he hit his shot...

I know this seems like very trivial stuff, but honestly, any help or info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Oh please, can we just put that lucky swing to rest? Why waste your time and talent on something as inane as a crippled man hitting a hanging slider out of the park. Surely there are more deserving subjects. I was half hoping he wouldn't make it around the bases.

I just want to hurl every time I see that %^*)!_ replay.

Damn! i thought this would be about Game 5 of the '84 WS. THAT was Gibby! He was all about the drama! i still can't believe the '88 WS HR still gets so much more credit. Guess the teams were more popular. i mean come on... in game 5, he had already hit one out, first base is OPEN and The Goose begs Williams to let him pitch to Gibby. That's the one i always default to when someone mentions Kirk Gibson's 'legendary homer'... not to mention the classic image burned into every Tiger fan's mind:

  • might want to try and contact phil at oldschoolimages on ebay. he might me able to help.
  • I actually just did a school lesson with some 4th graders and used this as my material for the lesson. I typed in google for a video of the HR and it took me to a site that showed much of what you are asking for. It might have been an MLB.com link. I would google Kirk Gibson homerun. I think that is what I used and it was one of the first three links.

The other day, I heard Tommy Lasorda on ESPN radio on my way to work. He gave a very detailed account of that game and Gibson's at bat. It was great radio.
Kirk didn't even get dressed until the 9th inning. That homer is one of the most famous in major league history. Jack Buck's call is a classic as well.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is being foolish.

I remember watching the '84 series live and want to recall that Kirk Gibson punched a fan who ran onto the field? It's been 24 years and I was only 13 at the time. So were my eyes deceiving me or did Kirk give an unlucky fan a shot?

Gibson had several key hits that are not as recognized outside of Detroit, as they occurred in regular season (but important) games. The guy was a bit of a horse's behind, but he's still one of the most clutch non-HOF players I've ever seen play.

I was at a sports bar watching that game and I've never seen or heard anything like what I experienced that night. The place was pretty lively until the "thing" happened. Some screams of "I can't freakin' believe that!" the place went dead silent and emptied in about 10 minutes. And then of course we have to see the damn replay every October!

I agree, and likely in the top five for me.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
