Best combo card of all time?

Want to ask the board, what is the best combo player card of all time?

Comments

  • Do you mean the best players on a card? If so, I know there is a thread on this somewhere on this listserve. Some examples:

    Ryan/Koosman
    Johnson/Bird/Dr.J
    Schmidt/Cey/Hilton
    Ripken/Bonner/Schneider

My favorite: 1935 Schutter-Johnson #16: the Waner Brothers
I collect PSA graded 1980-81 Basketball.

It's not the best of all time, but it's one of my favs.

  • There's one Dodger card that has 4 greats on it, cant remember the name if this.

  • A few pop to mind:

    1962 T Mantle/Mays
    1958 T Mantle/Aaron
    1962 T Ruth/Gehrig
    1964 T Aaron/Mays

...please note these are cards with all players in a single pic; not like those league leader cards where they just put together individual head shots. If you do include L.L. cards, it'd be hard to beat the '66 Aaron/Mays/Clemente or the '77 Ryan/Seaver.

  • What a card huh Paul?

Also, to the OP.. there's a user on here named CWAZZY who's into multiple HOF'er cards, he may be able to suggest a few.

Some 60's LL cards have multiple HOF's on them like:

    Clemente, Aaron and Mays.

    Koufax, Drysdale.

    to name a couple.

    Good for you.

    1954 Topps (I think)

The O'Brien brothers. (Twins) Played for the Pirates.

Both were middle inf, they also pitched in the bigs.

    Good for you.
  • To me the best combo card of all time is the 1966 Topps #215 NL Batting Leaders (Clemente, Aaron, Mays), the only card upon which these three NL HOF outfielders all appear together.

Another neat card is 1963 Topps #3 NL Home Run Leaders, the only card to ever feature five HOFers (Aaron, Mays, Banks, F.Robinson, Cepeda).

And then, of course, there's the 1980 Topps Basketball Bird RC/Erving/Magic RC card.

Other neat single-team baseball combo cards include the 1965 Topps #8 NL ERA Leaders, a two-player card featuring Koufax & Drysdale, and the 1967 Topps #423 Fence Busters featuring Mays & McCovey (my favorite, being a lifelong Giants fan).

Among non-baseball combo cards, you've got a bunch of early 70's basketball league leaders cards featuring three HOFers, the 1977 Topps Football #3 Rushing Leaders card with Payton & OJ, and the 1979 Passing Leaders card with Staubach & Bradshaw.

  • Steve! Get back on the Rackie thread!

  • Let's not forget the pre war cards; some of those Hansen Triple folders have some nice combos, Matty,McGraw,McGinnity & Tinkers, Evers, Chance come to mind.

Is that Ernie Banks next to Aaron?
  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,934 ✭✭✭✭✭
That is a SWEET looking card, I wonder what all those guys were doing at Fenway? The All Star game was held at Washington that year..
  • Photo is from 1961, when the second All-Star Game was at Fenway.

    That makes sense!

I used to think that was Banks too, until a fellow board member corrected me by pointing out that Mr. Cub wore #14. That's Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro (#8) next to Aaron (and Yankee catcher Elston Howard over Mantle's right shoulder too)...

  • Can't believe that the great '75 Topps/Topps Mini/OPC MVP combo cards haven't been mentioned yet, with the best of the bunch being the '57 Aaron/Mantle (I've always liked the '73 Jackson/Rose as well). The nice thing about these cards is that they show the full range of Topps cards produced between '51 and '74, which is how I first became exposed to the older cards as a kid and learned how to quickly identify the year of a card without having to look at the stats on the back. FYI, 4SC has a PSA 9 Mini '57 Aaron/Mantle (pop. 12) on ebay right now with an opening bid of $100 (I have a PSA 9 that I pulled from a wax pack last year with perfect centering - one little ding along the bottom edge that existed before I opened the pack kept it from being a strong candidate for a 10).

I agree. That or the '57 Yankee Sluggers card (Mantle/Berra). I love the dugout pic on that card.

Bird/Johnson/Erving no question. Two HOF rookies with a high level HOF'er sandwiched in-between them??? Come on now. image
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Incredible cards guys! I love combo cards! I think they are one of the biggest values in the hobby. I've never understood their overall lack of appeal. If one HOFer is good, why wouldn't two or more be better? My all time favorite is by far the '57 Dodgers' Sluggers card. I also like the '63 Musial/Mays.

  • I actually had that card in a 6. The only thing I dont like about it was that the photo was old. In other words, it was a 1959 card with a 193X photo.

Most of the other cool combos are/were "current" players with "current" photos which adds to their appeal.

Cant deny the Ruth/Teddy card is cool though.

I think it's a tie b/w 62 Manager's Dream (Mantle/Mays) and the 57 Topps Dodgers (even though I'm a Yankees fan, I think that is one bad mo fo)
    Working on these raw sets:
    54 & 55 Bowman
    55, 56, 58, & 60 Topps.
Have lots of cards, including some PSAs, 53-58 to trade.
Also, have Football 55-57 to trade for BB cards.

YOU DON'T RUN ON ROBERTO CLEMENTE!!!

Thought I would share my '57 Dodgers' Sluggers card. It is a MK qualifier but I haven't found anyone that can find the mark on it yet.
