Any soccer fans out there?

Slightly off topic, but was wondering if there are any other soccer card/memorabilia collectors out there? I've got quite a few cards from the A&BC sets of the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's which were modeled after the Topps issues, as well as quite a few Sportscasters from the late 70's.

I also collect match worn soccer jerseys, primarily the club shirts of members of the US Men's National Team. However, the highlight of my collection (about thirty shirts) is Pablo Mastroeni's match worn US shirt from the 3-2 victory over Portugal at the 2002 World Cup in Korea ( one of the most famous victories in US soccer history). I was at the match with some friends, and was lucky enough to catch the shirt when Mastreoni threw it into the crowd after the match in celebration.

Probably the most unique item in my collection....

If anybody is interested, I will be happy to post scans of both cards and/or jerseys.

Matt

I have a lot of programs from the old Major Indoor Soccer League as well as some team sets from the early '80s. I also got on the Beckham bandwagon last year and have several of each of his rookie cards, the 1998 England World Cup set and the 2007 Upper Deck MLS set.

The 1970s Topps sets are really cool. I didn't know about them until just a few years ago and I love how they share the designs with the baseball and football issues of the day. (Oh, I also have the 1980 panel set (modeled after the basketball set.))

I'm a HUGE soccer fan. I'd love to see some pics.

And, I've got a nice, crisp $20 bill sitting here, if you want to part with that Pablo Mastroeni jersey.

  • Sorry EA,

But the Mastroeni jersey is not for sale.

If I ever do decide to put it up for sale, you'd have to show me a whole lot of crisp $20 bills.

Hundreds would be a lot better!

i burned a bunch of those soccer junk pro set cards from 90's , guess im not a fan huh-put off good heat though
  • Nah....ya did fine Rube....the Pro Set cards from the 90's were pretty much junk. Topps made a really nice British Stadium Club soccer set in 1993, and Upper Deck, of course, did soccer cards for the World Cup in 1994.

And Skilow....will have pics up by tonight.

Notice how many of the card designs are almost identical to either Topps baseball or football designs from the same year....

Here are a few of my favorite cards. 1996-97 Beckham Merlin Premier Gold rookie, 1997-98 Beckham UD World Cup rookie (Three Lions version- more scarce), two packs of 1976 Topps (2 cards per pack), 1981 Stan Stemenkovic MISL/Memphis team issue (Autographed on back. He tragically died following a fall on ice. He was known as the Magic Man due to his amazing dribbling skills.) Michael Owen 1997-98 UD World Cup rookie. (One of the biggest stars over the last 10 years.)

    Let's keep this thread going!

What's soccer? Is that the sport that moms try to get their kids to play when they aren't big enough to play football, coordinated enough to hit a baseball, or have the agility enough to play basketball? image

I'm not just a fan, I worked for an MISL team in the late '80s (L.A. Lazers).
After seeing those A&BC sets, now I have something else to start collecting. Shame on you. image

  • Great cards
  • Nick,

Just so you know, the A&BC cards are not hard to find on Ebay UK (they don't show up on regular Ebay quite as often). Anything after England won the World Cup (i.e. post-1966) shows up quite a bit, with the cards from 1959-1966 being the scarcest.

    Hope that helps!

That Bobby Moore looks like Van Morrison.

  • In case anybody is interested, I just found a box full of soccer Starting Lineup figurines from the late 80's/early 90's in my basement that I had totally forgotten about....Klinsmann, Baggio, Baresi, Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Matthaus, Lineker, and other major stars.

    PM me if interested....

Ha!........i actually have the set with George Best. I had forgotten......bought it like 25 years ago.
  • yea you are right on frank about those soccer players being duds compared to those macho american sports...american football...play for 5 seconds then rest for 40...play for 5 seconds then rest for 40 more....tough stuff there..........baseball...most players stand out there and 99 percent of the time do....ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...then spend 99 percent of the other half of the game SITTING ON THE BENCH DOING...you guessed it....absolutely nothing....HOW DO THEY DO IT!.......basketball....a sport played by giants who jump 4 inches, stuff the ball thru a hoop ...and people go wild...fascinating,frank.....all soccer players do is run an hour and a half ,up and down a huge field, where the whistle doesnt blow every 5 seconds....wimps ,those soccer guys

Love the game, but have yet to jump into soccer cards. Are there any recent EPL sets with any secondary-market value? The Match Attax are the only ones I can think of, but they just seem like junk wax game cards.
