Just bought this at an antique shop today. Paid $2 for it. Book is $160. The scanned pics don't due justice to the coin though.

Cool. A type I was totally unfamiliar with. That's one beauty of the Darkside. Even after years and years, I still come across unfamiliar coins I have never seen before. There's no need to specialize in minute, microscopic die varieties or tiny variations on the same theme, when there is such a vast arena to play in.

Too vast, for some, I guess. The sheer size of the Darkside probably intimidates some folk.

PS- I see that was marked with a KM number, so somebody apparently looked it up at some point. Interesting that you would get it so cheaply, if they knew what it was? Unless they got it in an estate or something. I can see the $2 sticker was added after the fact, so maybe they didn't know, after all.

I have an antique shop near me that I frequent. I don't know who the dealer is but most of his stuff is unc or proof. He doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to his pricing. He will have 50 cent coins listed for $2 and then turn around and have this $160 coin listed for $1. He lists common date francs from France for $2-3. I bought 23 coins for a dollar each and 10 coins for 2 dollars each --with tax-total 46.06. Just getting to thm tonight and searching them out in the catalog. So far they total catolog value of 276.00 and I still have ten to search yet. I got a one Tukhrik from Mongolia in BU that has alsome toning. I wish I could capture the color and show it. One of these days. Thanks for the remarks. Always enjoy your post. Olmanjon

You earned that "You Suck", fair and square.

Cool cherrypick- I like that portrait. The coin looks to have had an old cleaning, but at that price, WHO CARES?

Love that series with the art nouvous (sp?) theme, and short at that with only two years and two denominations (1897 & 1922 in the 50 centimes and 1 franc)...

I am trying to get a collection together of at least one coin from every country. This one fills a nice spot since they are all expensive from there.

I am still trying to figure out what kind of pot metal they struck these out of as they always appear with issues of small (or usually large) type in the planchet and definately with regards to wear.

The recent Bowers and Merena pattern sale in Baltimore had some of these but could not stick around to bid in person and think that the French dealers blew them out in price.
