What a joke. And as usual for Billy Crystal, an unfunny joke at that.

Seriously, who gives a crap if he does this? Most people dont care at all.
<< <i>I am not at all a Billy Crystal fan...in fact, I never did care for him. But he's a Yankees fan who is in a position to make a dream come true. Why bust on the guy? I think anyone here would do the same thing if they had the chance whether they were a celebrity or not. I think I sense a bit of envy? >>
Exactly.
<< <i>What's to stop anyone from doing this if they have the pull? Spring Training or not, it's a joke. >>
Other fans of certain teams if they had an inside connection might be able to do something similar, if so, the gimmick could get old really
fast if it started a trend. Ted Danson (Cheers) throw a few pitches for the Red Sox? etc. It is sort of a variation of "pros vs joes".
I'd have done it too.
Steve
It was not a minor league game, but a Spring Training game. Pittsburg Pirates at the New York Yankees.
Crystal fouled off the first strike down the first base line, then with a 3-1 count swung over two tough sliders. He did not strike out looking.
Lastly, it was actually Derek Jeter's idea to do this for a birthday present after a meeting with Crystal during the off season.
Hope this sets some of the record straight.
The foul ball also was smacked rather nicely too.
Yes we all knew it was a spring training game. (well almost all of us)

Or....

precedent had already been set - garth brooks and tom selleck have both made spring training appearances in the last few years, if I'm not mistaken...

Correct and they aren't taking someone's spot to do it. I see it as a team to repaying a celeb for promoting them through their career.
Heck, I can't even recall the last movie Crystal didn't mention the Yanks.
Yeah, I know, double negative. So sue me.
<< <i>Well, every few years we need a good publicity stunt.....i.e.
Or....

Do you have an Indiana Pacers card with Anne Meyers?

<< <i>Makes you wonder if a guy had enough money, could he even get to be the manager of a MLB team in a live regular season game? >>
BTW: The answer to this rhetorical question is "Ted Turner"
<< <i>Don't understand what the big deal is, either. Baseball is in the business of entertainment, and the spring training game itself is meaningless, anyway. Plus he got ONE at bat--it wasn't like he batted 4 times and took away someone else's playing time. >>
I understand the Mets are trying to trade for Crystal to help improve their team.

With Joahn and Pedro, we won't need to score more than a run or two to win most nights, so why not?

With the injuries and what's left in your lineup, "a run or two most nights" might be raising your hopes a little too high.

I've tried to hit 88mph pitches from a lefty in high school. It ain't easy. I can't believe he threw him cutters. Those
are hard to hit for MLB players, let alone 60 year olds with no minor league experience.
