Billy Crystal playing for the Yankees!

What a joke. And as usual for Billy Crystal, an unfunny joke at that.

Makes you wonder if a guy had enough money, could he even get to be the manager of a MLB team in a live regular season game?
  • stevekstevek Posts: 29,034 ✭✭✭✭✭
But this is a meaningless minor league game - I've got no problem with Crystal being allowed to do it considering all the circumstances. Hope he doesn't get hurt. Having a 60 year old out there possibly trying to field a screaming line drive or bad hop might not be the safest idea.

I dont see what the big deal is. It's just a promotional thing. I dont even care that he is doing it. Maybe he will turn his ankle and we will all finally laugh at something he did.
  • I don't think anyone outside of NY like Billy Crystal.
  • Another worthless celeb trying to salvage what's left of his career. There are suckers who will buy tickets to watch this too. What a joke!

I am not at all a Billy Crystal fan...in fact, I never did care for him. But he's a Yankees fan who is in a position to make a dream come true. Why bust on the guy? I think anyone here would do the same thing if they had the chance whether they were a celebrity or not. I think I sense a bit of envy?
Seriously, who gives a crap if he does this? Most people dont care at all.

What's to stop anyone from doing this if they have the pull? Spring Training or not, it's a joke.

Other fans of certain teams if they had an inside connection might be able to do something similar, if so, the gimmick could get old really
fast if it started a trend. Ted Danson (Cheers) throw a few pitches for the Red Sox? etc. It is sort of a variation of "pros vs joes".

After working the count to 3 and 1 and fouling off one he took 2 cut fastballs and got caught looking.

    I'd have done it too.

    Good for you.

caught looking? Looking in one's only ever MLB at-bat? I think I'd be swinging like Vlad if given that chance.

First off, let's correct a few errors from earlier posts.

It was not a minor league game, but a Spring Training game. Pittsburg Pirates at the New York Yankees.

Crystal fouled off the first strike down the first base line, then with a 3-1 count swung over two tough sliders. He did not strike out looking.

Lastly, it was actually Derek Jeter's idea to do this for a birthday present after a meeting with Crystal during the off season.

Hope this sets some of the record straight.

My mistake, I listened to a newcaster's report. I just saw the clip and he actually took 2 good hacks.

The foul ball also was smacked rather nicely too.

Yes we all knew it was a spring training game. (well almost all of us)

Well, every few years we need a good publicity stunt.....i.e.

precedent had already been set - garth brooks and tom selleck have both made spring training appearances in the last few years, if I'm not mistaken...

Correct and they aren't taking someone's spot to do it. I see it as a team to repaying a celeb for promoting them through their career.

Heck, I can't even recall the last movie Crystal didn't mention the Yanks.

Yeah, I know, double negative. So sue me.

Do you have an Indiana Pacers card with Anne Meyers?

Don't understand what the big deal is, either. Baseball is in the business of entertainment, and the spring training game itself is meaningless, anyway. Plus he got ONE at bat--it wasn't like he batted 4 times and took away someone else's playing time.

BTW: The answer to this rhetorical question is "Ted Turner"

I understand the Mets are trying to trade for Crystal to help improve their team.

With Joahn and Pedro, we won't need to score more than a run or two to win most nights, so why not? image

With the injuries and what's left in your lineup, "a run or two most nights" might be raising your hopes a little too high. image

Yeah, we've had some injuries to some guys, but I'll take my chances with Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Co. anyday...

  • I just finished reading the story, and it amazes me that a 60 year old guy got two 88mph cutters thrown at him.

I've tried to hit 88mph pitches from a lefty in high school. It ain't easy. I can't believe he threw him cutters. Those
are hard to hit for MLB players, let alone 60 year olds with no minor league experience.

Throwing out the first pitch is one thing (Crystal, Danson, S. King) but signing a one day contract and actually taking the field with the team is another.............Don't worry Sox fans, John Henry and Theo are smart enough not to offer up a contract with Steven King. What's next? Spike Lee suiting up to take to the court with the Knicks..................actually, he might help.
