1948 Leaf Football "Tough Set"

I am 21 years old and a collector from Minnesota. I hope to some day complete a 1948 leaf football set in psa mid grade. Although I have the drive, the competition is so feirce. The first few cards I have bought was such a great experiance. I also enjoy watching other peoples leaf sets grow. I hope to learn alot about the sportcard hobby and to learn even more from other collectors. It is definetaly near impossible to complete this set in high grade, which makes it so exciting and competitive to collect. Hopefully someday I will have put together one of the nicest leaf sets in the hobby.

Does anybody want to talk about their Leaf set?

Welcome to the boards! I dont own any Leaf Football YET, but I do agree its a very nice issue. Good luck and make sure you ask questions about it-there are quite a few guys on here that are very knowledgable of Vintage Leaf Football.
  • I'll talk about it until the friggin' sun comes up....literally. I love the '48 Leafs. I collected it from about mid-summer of '07 until December and then gave up. But I collected them raw. For me, it was just too hard. Some of the cards you just don't see often enough to buy in any grade and the ones that are graded high are outrageously priced. I think I was up to 70 out of 98. But I did the variations also which made it really fun. I graded and sold all of the variations and star rookies I believe at the end of January. The rest I threw into a complete series one set 1-49 and sold as is. If I thought I could complete it in 6-7 then I would pick it up again in a heartbeat but the money it would take to have a nice set just isn't in my wallet. Some of the cards go for 5-10 30 grand. But to do it in 3-5 grade is possible.
If you got the money you will have a friggin' blast with this set. The best card I had was a PSA 7 bobby layne, sold it for just under 7 grand and I think I will regret it until the day I somehow get it back. I feel it oversold and I still wish I had it back. It was beautiful. Mint front. Ahh the memories. Good luck guy. If you have any Leaf stories in the future you know at the very least I'll listen.

    1952 Topps Collector.

  • I have one of the few complete 48 Leaf sets. I constantly trying to upgrade and would like to get the set to all PSA 7, but I'll be happy with the minimum grade being PSA 6. Aside from the shortprints, many of the RC cards are in ALL-Time sets, so there is some strong demand in any grade when these cards becomes available. Do you have an idea what price range you are looking to spend on these cards?

    LeafDreamer:

Congrats on beginning your quest. I, too, have embarked on the journey. My initial aim is to work the set in VG-EX or better with solid centering. I've grabbed a decent number of cards since getting started, but I see how it's going to get touchy when I have to break down on some of the scarcer and tougher cards.

I've already resigned myself to the fact that I will have to succumb to some "uglies" for place holders. Already broke down and bought a PR-FR Bednarik.

    Now, bring me a shrubbery!

Great set! If Leaf would have made a few more football sets, I may have called myself BigDaddyLeaf!...nah! don't like the sound of that! image

The 48 Leaf is a fantastic set with great rookies. I wish the 48 Bowman set included the rookies Leaf has. Bednarik, Walker Nomellini, etc. The thing I think hurts Leafs popularity a little is that they only made 2 issues, and the 49's fronts are identical to the 48's.
  • Thanks for the welcome, I will definetaly look for advice from other collectors being I am not experianced. I will take any advice I can get. Thank you....Billy

That bites you had to sell your set. I think sometimes I go in over my head, but I can afford it now. I am a bears fan so I hope to collect bears cards in higher grade. Your bobby lane rookie must have been beutiful. It's just such a desirable set that you can get addicted to.

Thank you for the welcome, I also like the 57 set. I almost bought a psa 8 unitas rookie last year, that was when I was making huge bucks in construction. Did you get a 52 topps mantle yet?

Hello, I recognized your username and I have looked at your set many times "WOW". It is exactly how I want to picture mine in the future. I also would like to complete mine in a minimum psa 6. I guess I don't really know how much I would spend per card, but I will spend whatever it take to comple this set in high mid grade. Right now I am able to buy cards, while I am in college. I am happy that I am starting this set in my early years, it's gonna be tough competing with buyers who make more money than I will. If people where I live found out how much I have spent on already, they would think I am totally nuts. I guess they just don't have the passion like you and I do. I got so many Q's. Is ebay and internet auctions the only way to buy. Is there any hidden sources. How long have you been collecting your leaf set? I am only 21 years old so I don't have that much experiance. It feels really good to talk to finally meet someone who has been places that I want to go to in this hobbey. Any information about you or your set, I would love to here it. By the way, I would give anything to own a Billy Bye psa 8. It must be a beautiful card. I am from minnesota and I am a huge gopher fan. I hope to own one some day. Thank you...Billy
  • Thank you, its going to be a loooooooong, but exciting journey.

Yes, it is tough. My bar is set high at aminimum grade 5 or 6 and hopefully I can keep it at that. I am starting at ayoung age so hopefully that will help. How long have you been collecting leafs?

Haha, yes. Well, the less popular, the better for me. Even though it still is a popular set, thank god it's not baseball. I would be broke with my great leaf collection living in a shack. Yes, the bowman set is nice to. I want to get a bruce smith rookie psa 8.

I do not have the 52 Mantle card yet, but I will some day.

When I was in college I was probably one of the few guys who still collected. Most of my friends sold off their collections to pay for college or to buy new cars. I drove an old used car and kept my collection. (Mostly comics and 70's baseball cards). I didn't start building the 1948 Leaf set till about 3-4 years ago. Keeping in mind that what's considered cheap is matter of perspective, 48 Leaf in PSA 4-6 condition are great buys. Even some 7's and 8's are reasonable, but it all depends on the card. Also, with this set, eye appeal will definitely influence price even within the same grade.
Back on topic, PSA 5's and 6's are a great value. Using the Billy Bye as an example, my PSA 8 cost me over $1100. Yet the PSA 6 I previously had cost me $53.
I checked some recently completed auctions for PSA 6 cards:
Earl Girard $103 (very tough hi number)
    Ray Evans $53
    Bulldog Turner $110 (HOF RC)
    Pete Pihos $110 (HOF RC)

Billy, take your time with the set. Be discerning regarding eye appeall, and try not to overpay on the lower grade cards. You'll eventually have a really nice set.

Thank you for the help, I definetaly plan on being patient. I know exactly what you mean when talking about eye appeal. Leafs definetaly have their appeal flaws. It also seems like it can be tough to find out if you actually overpaid for a card. Obviousley, the smr isn't accurate with high or mid grade leafs, but I think if I overpaid for a card I would know it. So far it seems like I have a nack for the hobbey so I hope I will maintane it. I think I am on the right track so far, but if i have any more questions I will send you a message through your listed e-mail address in the psa set registry. Thank you again.....Billy
