Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of late 80's commons without trashing them?

I am in the process of cleaning out my house. I have a bunch of misc commons, mostly 1987-1990 baseball stuff. I have plucked out the stars/semi stars. I really do not want to trash these, but I am not sure how to get rid of them. I was thinking of donating them or giving them to a local shop? What ideas do you guys have?

Thanks,
Ben

You might try donating them to a local childrens' hospital. Not only is it a good cause, you can also take a tax deduction for the book value.

That is what I did , I wall papered my room with some of the cards I could not fit into binders , or under the bed in boxes , or in the closet or wherever ,
I'm running out of space , so what i did what pin up Black oak tag thick paper on the wall and put the binder pages over the oak tag ,

it looks kinda cool , a lot of my friends like it , I like it , my son loves it , my wife , well she could take it or leave it but she really don't complain about much we do with the hobby, she has an addiction buying autographed baseballs , so she is really filling up her own wall of stuff pretty rapidly .

So my son wanted to try his hand at doing his room as well . .

he did not want to use the black background though, I think it looks better with the black behind it , but it is his room .

Ya know, that is a great idea!!! I would've much rather gotten a bunch of sports cards for halloween as a kid, then a super hard piece of bazooka bubble gum. Of course you'd probably have to have some candy or something for the girls. And that comment is not intended to be sexist or anything, I'm just assuming that most (if not all) little girls wouldn't want sports cards.

Take them to your local sports bar and have them used as coasters. It can get you some free rounds everytime you go in and they are great conversaton pieces for the patrons!

Donation's the way to go. You can write them off your taxes too. This year it made the difference between owing and not owing.

Folks here have donated to childrens' hospitals, I've donated to my church's youth department, and schools might take them too.

I had the same problem. I tried to donate them to a childrens hospital and they pretty much said they did not want my cards and they also are limited on space. I contacted a guy who came and picked them up from me and I was paid $10/each. There is a guy a on the boards here that will travel to pick them up from you and will pay about the same. I do not remember his name though, do a search for "commons" "5,000 count" and also search the BST forum.

edited to add: They can be deducted from your taxes if they are appraised and those cards are not worth it.

Goodwill takes everything! I gave the bulk of mine to a children's home a few years ago. However, now I give to Goodwill. A few thousand every time I take stuff in.

    I don't know.

If you took a 1988 Donruss Kelly Downs card, folks would probably tell you it was worthless.

If you look in the Beckett, it says it's 5 cents.

If you put it up on Sportlots.com, for 8 - 15 cents, a set builder will come along and buy it eventually.

Both the Beckett and Sporlots says it's got some value.

To some collectors who are spending hundreds and thousands on high end cards, 5 cents looks like 0 cents, but it's not.

  • Also consider dontaing them to a school. They are just the types of things that teachers love to use as rewards, and I've know a few teachers in my time who have actually used the statistics on the back to help teach kids math.
  • Great stuff guys. I appreciate the ideas. Not sure yet, but the thoughts are great. THANKS!!!

You only need an appraisal, for IRS deduction purposes, if the total exceeds like $5,000 or so. I believe Digicat is correct in valuation. Price guides and comparable sales I believe are both acceptable for determining value for deduction purposes.
