I'd like to warn you all about an eBay seller

While looking at past prices on cards at the VCP website, one of the cards I was looking at was 1964 Sandy Koufax PSA 9. Something that caught my eyes was that on 12/11/08 and 1/13/08 the same seller sold that card each time. I thought it may have been that the seller, carterscards100806, had 2 of them, but while checking the auction pages, it seemed to be the same card due to the PSA certification number. The first time to discounjems for $898.05 and then to all-american-2000 for $968.00 The first thing I did was check feedbacks to see if he had left one for discountjems, and sure enough they exchanged positive feedback for the card.

Just out of curiosity I did a little more digging. In researching both discountjems' and carterscards100806's feedback I found something that struck me as odd. The seller carterscards100806 had a pretty descriptive feedback sentence from 2 of the same buyers. It said: Received cards in perfect condition in 2 days. How often does that happen? To me, that is not the kind of exact feedback sentence that 2 different people would leave. The 2 buyers that left it were discounjems and highspeed28. Now I had 3 ebay accounts to keep an eye on, and luckily all three had sold something on eBay recently so I checked where each ID was located and the three locations were Twinsburg, Ohio (carterscards100806) - Aurora, Ohio (highspeed28) - Solon, OH (discountjems) A quick check of a map showed me that those 3 towns are all within 11 miles of each other.

To me all this points to shill bidding but you all can draw your own conclusions. Also, if one of you guys that are more savvy at reporting alleged shill bidders to eBay than me can use any of the above facts to have the seller carterscards100806 investigated by eBay, then please do. I just wanted to warn any of you guys that may have already bought, or are thinking of buying from this seller that it looks like he may have at least 2 accounts that he uses to shill up the bids on his auctions. My advice is to stay away from carterscards100806 auctions.

  • Forget about reporting shill bidding anymore.

Ebay is doing it all in house to help the collecting community....

Forget about it? There was an auction a couple of weeks ago where msmith and dsmith or something like that were shill bidding both accounts were NARU'ed in 4 hours.

The case mentioned above would be very hard to prove as an actual shill because they all sell and there is no pattern of them consistantly bidding on the others auctions. It could be that they do know each other and when they list something the other is interested in they bid just like anything else. If Ebay looked into and saw that maybe the items were not paid for or were filed as mutual UPIs or something then there would be suspicion. There is no rule against me bidding on an item a friend of mine is selling, UNLESS it is done with the intention of artifically raising the final price. Remember a good shill bidder NEVER wins the auction.

    Good work.

I'd be in favor of running an ad in the local Twinsburg newspaper calling them out.

I live in Parma, which is about a 25 minute drive from those 3 cities. All 3 of those cities are VERY close to each other...I believe they border each other. Do you want me to drive over and kick some butt??? image

Nah, let's all pitch in and buy the card, and then you can go over there and rip it up in front of them to prove that their shill bidding doesn't hurt you in the least. They'll see you rip up a $900 card and freak out cuz they'll think everyone is crazy and they'll stop shilling. See how easy it is to stop these fools? image

It may be true a good shiller does not want to win but it is a way to set an artificial "reserve". If the "shill" does does not get the price high enough they still have the card to sell again. Perhaps someone is hoping the 3rd times the charm.

    Hey, somebody noticed!

yeah, I was kinda bored. I mastered a game called "canyon defense" on miniclip.com so until there is another one released, I'm kinda looking for something to do.
  • Actually you CAN still figure out who the bidders are bidding on. It just takes a little legwork and in most cases not worth the time.

Just like viewing private feedback it can be done.
  • thanks for heads up!!!!
