Grumpy Old Metal Detectorists !!

I went to a local park today ,,its not a small park in fact its several acres in size ,, I stopped got out and put my stuff on and started in a small corner ,, about ten minutes later a couple of old guys probably around 70 or 75 come walking over ,,I see they are carrying detectors and I think cool !! some other detectorists to talk with and get to know .

well they proceeded to read me the riot act about detecting in an area where other detectorists are already looking !! I have to tell you ,,I did not see these guys when I pulled up ,,and it took them 10 minutes to walk over to where I was ??

I said if they wanted to look in the corner where I was I would move some where else in the park and they said I could move to the next town as long as I got out of the park !!

what a couple of grumpy old farts !!

I went ahead and left to keep from going to jail !! I was ready to tie a piece of both of them to my hood !!

I hope I never get like that !!

I don't put up with that! I understand your choice to not confront these two. I take out my cell phone and take a photo of people that confront me. ALSO people with dogs OFF leash!!!

Once you take a photo (or make like you took a photo) they rethink the hole thing over.

I have encountered others detecting and some like to chat and some make it obvious that they are out there to get away from everyone and everything. I can appreciate that. I have never had anyone approach me like that those two old coots did you. I'm afraid I wouldn't have reacted real well to that sort of verbal abuse as I can be quite the master of expletatives if pushed. Sorry to hear you had a hard time.

They probably know of some gold burried somewhere in the park and they want it for themselves.
Now get back out there and find it 2bits. Bring some pepper spray with ya. That'll keep them at bay.

Ya I will be going back during the week ,,and the Gold thing might not be too far off !! it is the site of the old railroad station and opera house as well as a park that has been there for a long time !!

I was not completely without a clue as to where i was and what might be found !

some of my research uncovered this little tid bit of info !! well really only a photo but still once I saw it I knew where I wanted to detect .

go forward and back a couple from this picture the lake is no longer there and the opera house and depot have both been torn down or moved ,,but I have to believe that some of the stuff that was lost during its operation are still there . where I was would have put me just inside the archway .

Don't take no crap off 'em, either, though, if it's a public park and you're within your rights being there. If they try to run you off, they'd better show you they've got some weight with the city or county or police force or the Pope or something.

The cell phone picture is a good idea (although they may not know what a cell phone is) - I do believe they may be 'milking' the area and being quite successful.. I would have told them to pound sand and continued. I just do not like to be pushed. No need to whack them - they will need nap time soon enough. Cheers, RickO

Yeah but you have to figure that a couple of losers like this could see your coins, call the cops and tell them that they found them and that you swiped them. They can collaborate each other's story after all. And unfortunately yes, people can be that spiteful.

I had somthing similar happen under different circumstances though.. A friend of mine and I were at a State Park fishing, It was early in the season and there were very few people camping in this state park. We had just arrived and set up camp and started cooking dinner when a couple of old coots showed up in a golf cart and without saying anything started walking very briskly up to us pumping there chests up and the whole deal...now I'm 6' 3" 250 and my buddy is pretty similar sized...and they started playing this good cop-bad cop routine on us about how our truck was parked on the grass or somthing. I mean these guys were 70+ if they were a day and just had these nasty attitudes..it was unreal. Anyway they said they were the "Campground Hosts" and for us to move our truck. We moved it and that was that, and later my friend and I were laughing about the fact that these guys had some real attitudes and took the Campground Host job pretty seriously!

Simply carry a sealed envelope with pictures of the coins and a handwritten note describing them and why you have them (to F--- with old farts heads) and let the authorities open the envelope - Shazam - they will be the fools and you will laugh for weeks... I love it when a plan comes together..... Cheers, RickO

They just wanted the place to themselves, maybe not used to other people there, or finding good stuff, good places are hard to find, for me anyway...
