Opinions please: Are any of these raw 84 Donruss worthy candidates for a potential 10?

I just bought a decent set of raw 84 Donruss. I posted another post to find out some of the 10's that sell for over $100.00. Of those cards, here are mine. Do any of these appear to be worth the grading fee to take the chance at a 10? If I have a 20 percent chance at one of them being a 10, it would be worth the risk to me. What do y'all think? The black mark on the Rogers lower right white border is not on the card, its on my scanner. Thanks for your opinions as to which ones if any that I should take the chance on.

Based on centering alone, only the Mattingly, Rogers and Dravecky could reasonably pull a 10.

    Yup.

The centering is a problem with the lot.

I like Dravecky, Sutter and the Checklist. I just got back a stack of PSA 10's on 84 Donruss, I can take a look at those and see what the differences were from the 8's and 9's.

I doubt that you will get any of the grading guru's in here to say "That card has a great shot at a 10" without seeing higher quality scans. But I would guess that they would be able to tell you that a 10 is probably not likely because of the centering. But don't take that the wrong way, because there all awesome cards. When I was a kid, the 1984 Donruss Mattingly was my favorite card, and it still is. Your Mattingly is pretty sweat and I would definitely said that in even if it wasn't going to make me any more money. I would even send in some of the really low pop cards when a really good special rolls around.

Does the checklist look a little slanted?

Thanks for the opinions so far, how do you go to the registry's or pop reports to find out which cards in the set do not have any 10's so far??

Yes, upon very close examination, it does look like that checklist has a very slight tilt. I saw elsewhere on the site where PSA has a $5.00 special on modern cards right now so I might join that Collectors Club to be able to submit and send in a lot of my nice 84's to see if I can hit a couple. I figure if I send in 20 cards and get one to hit a 10, then I'll at least break even, and anything more than that is a bonus. But, it would suck to not get one single 10 and would be like lowering the window of your car and just letting a $100.00 fly out the window.

Yup, but not enough to keep it out of a 10 holder. Assuming the card is still "Square"

The Mattingly is probably an 8 unless you want to try and clean up that top right corner "fuzz". The bottom left looks a bit soft too.
  • Are you willing to part with that Von Ohlen if you have a spare (any condition) or anyone on this board? I played against him in baseball in the MABL on Long Island for a few years (I think he's still pitching). Even in his upper 40's his fastball had some good life and his off speed was very sharp. I'd like to get him to sign it.
