Playing Leap Frog with the HOF set.

Lower ranked sets have been passing the HOF set on the Set Registry Request List. How many set will pass it by before the HOF set is officially added to the registry?

Here is the e-mail BJ sent me last night:

Just wanted to give you update. I sent all the spec numbers over to programming yesterday. There were many data entry errors from PSA receivers that will need to be cleaned up. But the bigger hold-up is the fact that the programmers are getting ready to port the whole registry to cold fusion. They were testing it yesterday. I suspect that it won't happen until early next week. Until it happens, they can't do any programming. Therefore, the HOF set is now on hold for a few days. Penny has outlined exactly how she wants to program it, so it shouldn't take too long once she can work on the registry again.

Thanks for your patience. It won't be long now!

  • Hal,

Im I correct that for the Hall of Fame set you will need only one card from each player? I think most people were under the impression that the hall of fame set was going to include all cards issued of hall of famers and that you would need to collect all of each player's cards. Of course that would be a huge undertaking! Needing only one card from each player is much more manageable.
  • Alfie:

Just ONE card of each Hall of Fame Player !!!

That's the beauty of the set: You can fill one spot with a PSA 5 1976 Hank Aaron card ... then upgrade to a PSA 7 1970 Hank Aaron card ... then upgrade to a PSA 9 1957 Hank Aaron card ... etc. Thus, the ability to upgrade is much easier since you are NOT stuck to just finding a player's card for one particular year!!!

The older a card is ... the more points it will be worth. (19th Century Cards are worth 10 points, 1900-1916 are worth 9 points, etc.)

The "bigger star" each player was ... the more points his cards will be worth. (Babe Ruth is worth 10 points, Eppa Rixey is worth 6 points, etc.)

    AND THE BEST NEWS IS....

That you do NOT have to remove your cards from your other registered sets to enter them in the HOF set!! In other words, you can register your 1951 Mantle and Mays cards in BOTH the 1951 Bowman set AND the Hall of Fame set!!!

    Halley,

I like the sounds of it. Can't wait to see it.

Would I be right to assume the HOF set would require cards contemporary of the players? That is, a set like 1999 Century Legends, which contains about 50 HOFers, seems like an easy, cheap way to get a jump on it, not to mention the fact that the conditions would be uniformly very high. And then there are sets like 1940 Play Ball or 1948 Leaf that have major HOFers long after their playing days are over, but are still "vintage" sets.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Modern cards will count for so few points that it would not be worth the time to do it that way. Plus, it would cost more to grade the cards than they are worth.

There is still some debate about the 1940 Play Ball set with old Hall of Famers, and the 1950 Callahan set, and the 1961 Fleer set ... but again, since those cards are a LOT newer than the "original" cards of those HOF'ers (1887 Old Judge, 1888 Allen & Ginters, etc.), they will not count for nearly as many points.

Would a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams card (other than #68) have the same point value as his 1954 Bowman card?

Two more sets have jumped over the HOF set.

    1975 Topps Baseball Mini's & 1961-62 Fleer Baseball

...Should be 61-62 Basketball not Baseball

'75 mini is a no-brainer. They already have the database set up for that one.
BTW, I'm not sure they don't mean baseball - the 1961 Fleer baseball set was issued over a 2 year period.
