Wow - a bit of a shock considering the success he had last season.

I think Favre has a "pretty good" chance of getting into the HOF on the first ballot. image

Wow! Im very suprised as well considering he was a missed FG away from playing in the Super Bowl last year, gotta love the guy for his commitment to the game. The HOF will welcome him with open arms for sure.

I think the season he had last year led him to retirement. He leaves when the team has a good future, a hopefully capable QB, and even though his last game was a loss, unless you win the Super Bowl your team loses it's last game.

I'm sad as a Packers fan, but I'm happy for him. He didn't get that career ending injury, he got to win a ring and make enough money to retire young. Thanks for the memories, Brett Favre.

  • I'm sad. And a little disgusted that I'll have to watch Rogers behind center next year. I'm not too sure how that whole thing is gonna go.

It is going to be a big adjustment for Green Bay fans that is for sure, he has been there so long. I hope they give Rogers a fair chance
    to prove himself.

    Kind of funny.

ESPN's first story was really short (like 2 or 3 sentences) and said it was per foxsports.com

Now, they have a long article and no mention of fox..

    Favre tells Packers he's retiring
    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: March 4, 2008, 10:07 AM ET

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.

A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions, passing Dan Marino's touchdown mark last season.

As a player Favre was known for his durability, his willingness to take risks and turn broken plays into big gains and the way his love for the game was evident in the way he played. He went to a pair of Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, winning it all on his first try, as well as nine Pro Bowls.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen contributed to this story

He has that super bowl ring, a great career overall and really nothing left to prove. He also kept his word not to let the decision drag
on and on like it did last year.

If Favre retires and Roger's starts at QB next year I wonder if he will reprise the role of Brian Griese after Elway retired, or if he will reprise the role of Tom Brady when he started in place of Drew Bledsoe.

Griese was a big bust for Denver.

If Rogers plays well as a starter, the 49rs will kick themselves for picking Alex Smith ahead of Rogers.

Should be interesting to see what happens.

The pressure on Rogers is going to be tremendous following in the footsteps of a legend that is for sure.

I'll believe it when he is not starting during week 1 of the 2008 season. Plenty of time for him to change his mind.

I was thinking the same thing when I heard this news break. He is tough solid QB and I respect him, but I do think he is overrated as an all time great and his annual retirement watch got old years ago. >>

so what are your qualifications for an all time great?? I dont think there are that many Qb's that could do as much (maybe elway) when the play broke down and they had to do it themselves. yes he threw the most pics, but he also threw nearly (if not) the most passes. since i have seen nearly all of his games, he also had many of those int's passes that bounced of wr's as well. seems to happen when you throw hard. the ball seems to pop up not just fall to the ground.

but every one has their own opinion about how to decide all time bests. what i dont like seeing is that they tend to only take into consideration one era.

was watching ESPN today and they were saying that rumor has Favre upset about Packer management and the end result was his retirement...they further said that if something happens (probably there begging him to come back) that he would probably reconsider....

during the espn talk they also made mentioned that he was a little upset they didn't pursue Randy Moss....I don't know, seems that Donald Driver is a pretty fair receiver that they already have....

He really is! Also Greg Jennings is a good up and comer as well, See this is what I dont understand here, he has dangled the retirement thing with the Packers before and now does it yet he needs to call out the management for not pursuing Moss? Moss mooned the Packer fans and disrespected them, I dont know why Favre would get into this and say its a reason for him retiring, why tarnish his god like reputation like that?

I hear ya Perkdog...although this is what the espn folks were saying. Who knows what the truth really is other than Favre and the Packers. Sometimes I think I'm better off not listening to all the nonsense that is said on television. they make mountains out of mole hills to say the least. We've been seeing it here in Cleveland with C.C. Sabathia and his contract. every minor thing that gets said is made into more than it really is.
