  • Byzantine Empire bronze follis of Justinian II 527-65. Great condition and in one sense it does look genuine, but the fact that it's so nicely round makes it a little suspect to me. Still, these coins are generally not counterfeited or reproduced as replicas so i'm not
    sure what to think..

    I haven't looked at Byzantine for years, but this piece just doesn't look right; too perfect.

    Unfortunately there's a very similar follis of Justinian I listed as a known fake at FORVM Ancient Coins. The fake is from the same mint, officina, and regnal year as your coin and has the same peculiar flan shape. I'm no expert in Byzantine, but I think you'll notice many similarities in the details between your piece and the known fake.
